I seem to be going to North America this year!!!!

I have a Zumo with full EU mapping and would like to keep this...

I can obviously buy North American maps from Garmin but has anyone done it and kept the Eu ones?

i.e. I want both on there - I don't want to lose Euro maps

Do I buy the SD card (which I suspect with Garmin will be just big enough to git with no space for music etc

Or the DVD or download

I want to have them on basecamp and the device and the garmin page seems to say I can't do this!
Garmin link here

I have heard mention of gpsunderground - how does this work?

Any help appreciated

Put the US maps onto an SD card, or buy them pre-installed on an SD card.

Load SD card into device

De-select UK / Europe maps

Select US maps

Your device will not lose you UK / Europe maps

You can have as many maps as you like loaded onto your PC, accessible via BaseCamp or Mapsource

Job done.

You do have the micro SD card in the slot behind the battery? You've gone, via the menus, to Tools > Settings > Map > Map Info? The mapping should be showing there and is activated by checking the check-box next to it.

Sorry, had to check the obvious.

Does the Zumo read other cards? I assume your primary mapping is on a separate card. That's unless you only opted to load part of Europe last time you updated. In fact that you say you can just see Europe listed seems to indicate the latter. Is that's the case can your 660 read music or routes off of the card?

Have you updated to the latest firmware, 4.90 ISTR. Not that that should make a difference to the unit's ability to read an SD card.

I think a call to Garmin is probably in order, though now that'll have to be Monday morning.

If your visit to the States isn't geographically extensive, i.e. just a few states, then I would have suggested Open Street Maps.

When you connect the zumo to the PC and open Basecamp it should show as a device and if the map is on a card in the zumo you should be able to open it in Basecamp. To see it on the zumo you will have to unlock it. Basecamp - Maps - Manage map products is the way in to that. All this assumes you have a legitimate Garmin product

Didn't think that you had to unlock the Garmin 'map on card' products, might be wrong though. Hopefully that's it.

SD card test from Garmin.........

Question: What should I do if my device cannot read the map downloaded to the micro/SD card?
Answer:
If you have an SD card reader or an SD card slot in your computer, you can load JPEG picture files to your card to test the SD card reader on the device. If the device reads the picture file just fine, then the card reader is working and the issue is likely due to a problem with the map data itself.

However, if the device is not able to read the picture file on the card, then the issue is likely to be with the SD card itself or the device's card reader. Try using another SD card. If that is also not working, contact product support for assistance.

To load a picture onto the micro/SD card on a Windows PC:

Click on the Start menu
Double click on My Computer (XP) or Computer (7 or Vista)
Double click on the micro/SD card drive
This will be called Removable Media or Removable Disk
Right click in an open area within the window
Select "New" from the menu
Select "Folder"
Name the folder JPEG
Locate and place a picture that is in .jpg format into the folder
Eject the micro/SD card from the SD card reader
Stick the micro/SD card into the device and go to the Picture Viewer
This can be found from the Tools or Apps menu depending on device
The loaded picture file should display within the Picture Viewer.

To load a picture onto the micro/SD card on a Mac:

Double click on the micro/SD card icon as it appears on your desktop
This can also be located in the Finder window under Devices
Some cards may appear named as "No Name" or "Unknown"
Right click in an open area within the window
You may also hold the Control button and click with your mouse or trackpad
Select "New" from the menu
Select "Folder"
Name the folder JPEG
Locate and place a picture that is in .jpg format into the folder
Safely eject the micro/SD card from the SD card reader
Place the micro/SD card into the device and go the Picture Viewer
This can be found from the Tools or Apps menu depending on device
The loaded picture file should display within the Picture Viewer.

So Newboy, I'm intrigued... did you manage to access the US mapping? Was the map file on the card locked? You can't just leave us in suspense...
