UKGSer’s Wobble Box Weekender - October 2026

I asked Ash about that. The scooter’s range is about 100 miles, so it’s handy to have the can aboard.

Back home safely after a smooth uneventful cruise home. Thanks Richard for organising an enjoyable weekend, great to meet up with people and enjoy drinking, good food and great company.

Great to meet up with a few regulars.

Two observations: One, there was a lady on site with a pleated tartan skirt, wellies and that sexy just had a roll around in the barn look....I think I’m in there.

And two, having seen Ash’s van with a scooter hanging off the back...Wapping’s goventure multitool truck could easily take a bike, jet ski, dune buggy...you get the picture.

Nice to meet you all. Thanks for the cuppa @Wapping

Thank you all for coming along. It was fun meeting up, everyone getting along and having a good time. My particular thanks to Team Pukmeister for an excellent taxi service on Saturday and an entertaining visit to Bridgnorth, much appreciated.

As agreed, let’s do something again next year, God willing. I’ll create a hold-the-date thread.

It’s an oddity of the vehicle that it’s not actually as big as it looks.

There were, just in this one site, larger vehicles, including one that I missed taking a picture of:

What I think might distort the impression of size is:

A. Its height. That said lots of motorhomes with an over cab sleeping cab might well get near the three metre mark, even with a lowered chassis.

B. That it’s dark grey / black, which I guess amplifies its perceived bulk.

Inside it is smaller than many conventional motorhomes, not least (in comparison with my former Bailey *) as it’s lost a metre off the length and half a metre off the width.

:beerjug:

* The oddity there is that a lot of bods remarked how much larger the Bailey was inside. More space, in other words, than they had expected. That was down to some actually quite good layout design by Bailey in 2016 for their new vehicle. It was fine when there was two or three of us in the vehicle, but solo it was just wasted.

It was interesting to hear those that came to the Wobbly Box event, commenting on the high cost of new VW camper vans. As they said, it comes to a tipping point, when a proper motorhome or larger camper van can, arguably, become ‘better value’.

Our LWB VW van works perfectly for us as it gives us access to everything a car has access to. It can be a daily drive too, with no real restrictions.

I agree the prices of VW campers are high, but they hold onto that price.

Personaly I think a caravan and decent vehicle make the best sense of all for most situations. But my wife spent her younger years holidaying in a caravan and I don’t wish to tow anything larger than a pea.

I have never holidayed in a caravan nor towed one. That aside, it makes no odds what vehicle one chooses, not least as they are all a compromise of some sort. The important thing is simply to have a good time, no matter where or how.

Spot on

You can’t wild camp with a caravan. You’d have big problems taking a caravan to most of the places I like to go. Very little room to turn round. Plus if you find somewhere nice to stay you can’t. You always have to stay on a site.
Don’t get me wrong, I do like caravans, I’ve had 3 in the past plus 3 folding campers. I won’t have another though.

I’m up on Hay Bluff tonight.
3 camper vans here.
Not a clue where I’ll be tomorrow night yet! :thumb2

Leave no trace. :thumb2

Two points:
1. I thought black/grey was supposed to hide your size...like Dawn French in Dunkin Donuts.
2. I’m glad I didn’t bring Sally, who’d have felt hard done to in our 1.5 man mountain tent.

‘‘Twas a lovely Van.
