Ultimate Sin..I left my GS idling, advice?!

Just removed my head from hands to type this; Started my 2005 GS yesterday morning for a ride and my wife called me back for a phonecall....and I forgot to turn bike off!

40mins later (no, not a typo) I put phone down and returned to bike...still running!! but it was red-hot obviously.

After turning it off, I could hear ther fuel in the tank bubbling agressively... a close escape I reckon.

Anyway....left it till this morning and checked bike. Started ok, no warning lights anywhere. Took it for a 5 mile run and seemed to run as normal.

However, the engine oil has discoloured and smells obsolutely foul. It has only recently had a full service so I know oil was new. I'm not aware that engine oil should smell like this (even if polymers break down?) so wonder if I have caused any internal damage?

Any advice?

Your oil is "cooked" and ought to be changed, I only start my bike once I am sitting on it, it needs no warm up.

change oil and filter asap and check the oil level window for cracking and nip up oil cooler connections

Don't do it again

Change the engine oil and filter after using a flushing agent like wynns to get rid of the nasty old burnt deposits

I'd not flush (too thin) but replace with £5 ASDA oil and go for a ride, then replace with proper stuff.

Replace the filter too...

Oh yes almost forgot, buy one of those tubular tax disc holders too, that'll help

Make it a good long ride and drop the drain plug as soon as you get back.

Has the oil sight glass discoloured or melted at all? They are plastic and not glass. It'd be a shame to sort the oil then find the sightglass was leaking.
