I was down in Southampton today, so I took a peek at the Buell Ulysses. I didn't get to ride it, but it looks good! Well made and downright gorgeous! I know it won't do off-road like the GS, and it's durability remains to be seen, but on looks alone........................ If I didn't have a GS...................... :thumb

It got throroughly panned up against the 12GS in one of the comics this month, RiDE, maybe? And not only off-road, but in the 12 was better in town, motorways and B-roads. Have to agree with you though, I had a butcher's at the NEC and the Buell does look tasty.

I've ridden other Buells and this just has longer travel suspension. I sat on it at the bike show (NEC). :bounce1

I think it would be more of a competitor for the Multistrada than a GS. Riding position is very similar and neither have any real off road pretentions.

In terms of build quality - the manufacturer isn't reknowned for quality and the NEC one was looking very second hand. Much more so than any other bike I saw there, and some were having a much harder time. The rear seet was well scuffed by rider's feet as they got on and off plus the panniers looked like they had been down the road.

Maybe it was a used one and they were trying to compete with the Boorman bike on the BWM site :D

Motorcycle Consumer News did a head to head comparison between the Uly and the 1200GS last month. To everyone's surprise the Uly won, beating the GS in nearly every category aside from serious off-roading. It was a surprising result because MCN has always been accused of having a BMW bias (most of its staff own one). Just out of curiosity, I test rode a Uly in mid October. It really is as good as MCN said it was. The one thing I didn't care for (aside from the high seat height) is the heat produced by the rear cylinder. Its not nearly as bad as my Ducati or any of the Japanese V-twins I've ridden, but I still found it bothersome while stopped. I'm not at all tempted to buy one as I already have a bike better suited to my style of riding, but I'm amazed that the Buell managed to impress me as much as it did.

This is what I posted in the other thread above, but equally valid here:

I rode the Uly in the morning, and a GS12 in afternoon - over pretty much the same route. I was dissapointed with the Uly. I experienced head-shake and wobble. A mate who tried it, found it was totally smooth. The difference between us? He is about 5' 8". I am 6'2". He is about 170 pounds, me closer to 300. Conclusion: This is not a bike for big buggers!

Another thing: I had the feeling I was going to fall over the front of the Uly. Very weird feeling... on the GS I was more "in" the bike. Suited my size much better.

Handling: My vote goes to the GS. Much more smooth and stable. The Uly felt shakey through the corners... again because of my height and weight. My mate had no issues at all. He felt the GS was like a pig compared to the Uly. Horses for courses.

My vote: Clear winner in the GS.

Kev. Waiting for the GS12ADV. Yeah! :thumb

are the lights any good
if they are
will these fit in place of the 1150's................... HHHHmmmm
just a thought

I'm not exactly svelte and I couldn't even get my feet down properly, let alone test ride the thing.

Anyway, Bike magazine says the KTM is the best uber-trailie so what do we know

Sat on a Uly at the NEC show. Thought the switchgear was like something out of the seventies. very dated IMO

I test rode one for a couple of hours and although it was definitely faster than a GS it never felt as well planted. Also the brakes were feeble by comparison, there was no wind protection to speak of and the cooling fan at stand still was noisier than the engine.Apart from that it's ok for a first attempt but i wouldn't buy one.

Interesting design though! Do you think HD went over board on the Judge Dread look to compensate for the rubberband at the back? :D

German engineering Vs Harley/American engineering, easy choice for me

So you're buying the Buell then.

:hapybnce:

My thoughts exactly. Anyone who seriously thinks cracked splines, broken u-joints, failed final drives, imploding transmissions, and countless reports of brake failure represents engineering excellence, truly deserves a BMW. :tosser

Faster than a GS1200 ???    Why, That's plainly not possible?

Good to know you can spell " definitely"...... :dabone
