unding hex nut on forks

Hi

Trying to replace the fork seals on my R80GS paralever. I've managed to remove the fork assembly, but can't shift the hex nut underneath each stanchion. Are they always that tight ?

Any tips would be very welcome

Is the nut turning along with the internal damper unit? If memory serves, you have to use an allen key to stop this and a ring spanner to undo the nut?

I think I'm doing it all wrong the ! Basically Ive removed the fork assembies complete, turned them upside dow, and tried to undo the allen bolt underneath (at the bottom -underneath the stanchion). I'm not sure what you mean by a nut ? Where would that be ?

Are the tubes still in the triples? Are the springs still in the forks?

I've removed the springs - they're just loose. Not sure what you mean by the tubes in the triples ? I've detached each stanchion and slider completely from the bike, but I can't separate the upper and lower parts of the suspension. I have a manual, but mine looks different. At the very bottom of each fork (underneath) is a large allen bolt, which I can't budge.

According to Clymer, it looks like you might have type 4 forks; page 499.
On page 497, it says that the allen screw might be secured with a compound and use of an air impact driver might be necessary.

I've not had to use an air impact driver to undo mine (I use a socket-mounted Allen key on a power bar) - but I certainly use one to do them up as the inner slider can rotate. Once the Allen bolt has 'caught' I just torque it up normally, i.e. I don't overdo the use of the impact driver.

It sounds as though you are going to have to clamp the fork leg (carefully) and then use something rather more substantial than a normal Allen Key.
