Hi Guys

Has anyone had any experience of converting a pre 85 boxer to unleaded? What type of costs are we looking at ?

I had my Guzzi done some time ago at £350 - And was not to impressed with the results.

Cheers for any help

Ian.

Both Moto-bins and motor-works do the conversion, from about £150 to replace the valve seats, £210 to replace the valve guides as well.

I had mine done by moto-bins about this time last year, during there 10% off sale. I also had the all 4 valves, and springs replaced and with labour (£72) it came to about £215.

I thought it was worth it because unleaded feul is available everywhere, and the bikes milage was get up to th 60,000 mark and didn't fancy a 'dropped' valve

Both places have sales from time to time, best thing to do is give them a ring to see when the next one is coming up.

Moto-bins 01775 680580

Motor works 0845 458 0077

Hope this helps

i have done 2 unleaded conversions on boxers and one on a guzzi le mans.

one of the boxers had engineering done at motobins & other 2 were done at the cylinder head shop. all were good jobs, the CHS ones being a bit better perhaps.

depending on how many new valves you need cost is usually ITRO £300>350. you always need exhaust guides.

always get it done at somewhere you can trust. dropped valve seats make a bit of a mess :D

what was unimpressive about job done on your guzzi heads?

and who did the work?

Yes it does! Mine dropped last summer valve seat from right cylinders exhaust valve. Machinery shop wich made new seats etc. said that all other seats were also almost about to drop. Luckily I was just starting engine when it happened, so damage wasn`t SO big, valves were changed and as first aid used pistons, as other original damaged. Nikasils didin`t damage!

At this winter I`ve installed new cylinders, pistons (Sieberock replacement kit) and new piston rod bearings (and bolts for them).

I had my Guzzi heads done by Raceco - so Should have been ok - The bike did just not seem the same afterwards despite retarding the ignition.

However it could be that the rings that I put in at the same time did not bed in correctly. I am in the middle of an extended [ go slow] rebuild at present, I will be replacing the barrels & pistons so hopefully all will be well.

Having the Guzzi off the road has resulted in my trying a few other bikes - tried a HD sportster - sold that pretty quick as I just could not get comftable, next try resulted in a R1100S - great engine/chassis but can't get on with the riding posistion.

Am selling this an am undecided as to what to get next - possably a R1150GS or maybe a R80/100gs - hence the unleaded question. The problem is that with a 'newer' BM I will have to have a dealer service history if I want to sell the bike - I have always serviced my own bikes and this is what is drawing me to an airhead BM.

I am also watching a nice Guzzi 850T on ebay - but again this will need an unleaded conversion and I dont want 2 bikes in bits [ I cant rely on my Morini for 'transport'] .

Decisions Decisions!
