Unresponsive page

My desktop comp receives and sends email okay but when I try to log onto the web it refuses and says 'page unresponsive' or similar. It started doing this yesterday- first time I used it everything was okay, later in the day it was as described. No updates were carried out in the meantime.
All other gadgets and iPads work fine on the wi-if in the house but the desktop plays silly buggers.
Any ideas why would be appreciated.

I am guessing Internet Explorer and windows?
Clear the cache and the browsing history. Check for viruses with something like malware bytes. Better still go get another browser like chrome or Firefox. Obviously you will need to download and email it to yourself on another device or transfer with a flash drive.

If it is doing this on multiple browsers then try switching off the windows firewall.

Marki, it's on Google chrome and Windows, was running slow with Norton Internet security but no probs since installing avast.

How do I clear the cache? I have scanned it with the avast scanner and says it is and all okay, nothing detected. I haven't heard of malware bytes before- is it available to download online?

Yes it's a free scanner pay if you want to use it live. https://www.malwarebytes.org it has pulled me out the crap a few times at work.

In chrome if you go to settings / advanced and privacy you will see the cache stuff.

Are you getting the problems with IE as well or just chrome? If it is everything then it's firewall or a virus.

There is also a Google tool to detect and sort chrome along with bad extensions if you have loaded any.

No getting problems with IE but it's very noticeable how slow and clunky IE is.

Un-installed chrome and then downloaded it again and all seems to be well again.

I really ought to think about replacing the tower- it's about ten years old , still running windows XP....

Well I'm on Windows 10 ( chrome ) and although I can get a few sites like this one, other sites are failing to load and the Google Chrome page now displays YOUR CONNECTION IS NOT PRIVATE. Can't even get the likes of Yahoo.co.uk etc. Works OK on ie. I've uninstalled and again downloaded Chrome but bugger still won't work via Google !

The last sentence may be your clue......go to the flash, java, quicktime and a couple of other main plugin sites and ensure all your stuff is up to date.

I'm guessing that you may have disabled auto updates on Java or Flash, or some similar element that this and many more sites need to run.


PS if that IS what you've done, don't just allow them rampant access to your system...select the 'notify me before update' or whatever it says option.

I get this at work sometimes. This happens when your trying to access a secure site, one that is https://? you have a webfilter on your internet, whether it is on your firewall. pc or the stupid government filter hosted by your ISP. It is intercepting the secure traffic and putting its own certificate in place. Chrome knows this and is telling you about it. Wherever the filter is it is screwing up.

Another more sinister idea is that you have a trojan or something on your pc that is intercepting the traffic.

Hi not sure if you kept your XP up to date but if your not running with SP3 some websites will have problems, IE in particular due to security features that are not supported on older service packs.

If your running an older SP you need to get SP3 asap.

XP and IE8 are no longer supported platforms, a few of the glossier websites now will not run on this set up,.... (BMW for example) Use Google Chrome, runs ok over XP and enables access to newer sites.... will buy you some more time.

Any PC running an original XP install is getting on a bit now!

It's certainly getting on a bit- bought it boxing day 2006. It had a new hard drive and a couple of other new bits a bout 4 years ago so maybe they are helping to keep it alive a bit longer.
Seems to be okay with any sites up to now... the problem was that it wouldn't let me do anything at all after trying to get onto the chrome browser.
Ran Marki GSA's malware program and it came up with 47 'objects' detected, all low risk as far as I could tell.
