Quick question just done map update 2013.41 no problem to zumo 660 and basecamp but can't get an update to mapsource ( I prefer to use) I have tried garmin mapupdater but keeps returning an error and closes, any ideas?

And Mapupdater has been replaced by Garmin Express, so is also no longer supported I assume

I know that mapsource is no longer updated, I am trying to figure out how to get the maps updated but hey no one reads any more.

You wrote "can't get an update to Mapsource" In English I would take that to mean you were trying to update Mapsource itself. Nobody writes any more maybe?

If you have downloaded updated maps to your PC the new maps should appear in the drop down box top left of the Mapsource screen. Sometimes I have had to re start the computer to get this to happen ( I use openstreetmaps now and update several times a year-just because I can)

I too much prefer Mapsource, I've used it for 10 years so I do know how it works by now. Basecamp looks to do things differently for no good reason and for me at least does not offer much in the way of progress

My apologises John last night I was really pissed off with Garmin, in the last year I think I have got away with 3 downloads with no problems.

Now the fuckwits have Garmin have changed the goal posts again, if you down load 2013.41 using Garmin Express it only goes to you unit nothing goes to the PC. To use the latest mapping on your PC you have to plug in your unit but even then you don't get full detail.

So I goes back to Garmin Map Updater normally works however it hung for ever and ends up with it self closing.

So basically now you can no longer route plan on your PC unless I have missed something in basecamp that gives more detail :nenau

Every time you want to use new maps at all you have to plug in your unit, which in Zumo's 660 case means opening up the back which can't be doing the water seal much good.:blast

All in all another fuck up by Garmin, why oh why don't that hire themselves some beta testers in the real world to test their systems before launching them. Help most of us would do it for free to just get a decent update system.

The gps forums are full it, so if any one on here has a way of getting the maps on to your PC without plugging into your unit please tell.

I know that feeling very well. I too wish that Garmin would seek user comment and do proper beta testing.

Your problem was also discussed on this thread;

I think it is about post 17 that suggests using Map Updater to get the maps onto the computer. So perhaps re-download Map Updater and give it another go. And, if you are on a Mac like me, a post on the second page gives the link to the Mac version of Map Updater.

Good luck,

i used garmin express to update the maps in basecamp on my mac. there was an option to choose destination tucked away somewhere.

in my case, i had no end of trouble getting the maps to the gps with express. garmin are fuckwits.

No problem. I'm used to being blamed for everything here at the hotel anyway! It looks to me as if you have only downloaded your new maps to the device and not to the PC. Looking at other threads on this it looks there is a tick box somewhere to allow a download to both.

As I said I now use openstreetmaps which have all the detail and info I had on my Garmin maps and the download has always been faultless. One of the reasons I use these maps is that it allows me to have up to date maps on my 2610 but our barman (a computer geek as well as a biker) uses the same maps on his 660. Garmin might just take notice if users stopped paying for their updates and used the free openstreetmaps instead. I don't know how it works in the UK now but here you can buy a new Garmin without the "free" lifetime maps. I would do that if I had to replace my 2610 and just use the openstreetmaps instead.

Well things have progressed a little, have got map updater to start, that took for ever but now it tells me that cannot update as no previous maps installed and both GPS/PC have at least 2013.4 on them although the GPS has got the latest 2013.41 via garmin express. Oh how I wish I had started with Map Updater from the start.:blast

What we need is for some kind soul (maybe even the same one!) to do a "BaseCamp for Dummies" like to superb "Mapsource for Dummies" a few years back and still available on this splendid forum. :augie

Not sure about basecamp but one for Garmin Express for sure I am finding all sorts of hidden gems.

But the video on the post Paul mentions is v helpful

There are lot of dummies on here! me included.

I would like to get on with Basecamp but every time I try I get so far and think "sod this I can do what I want in a couple of mins on Mapsource" So I give up and vow to try again when I have spare time. That could be my problem of course, doing what I do does not leave a lot of spare time.

Well I did use mapupdater, even though it came up with a couple of error messages I ignored them and continued and it did do the full update to my PC. Fortunately mapupdater does give you the opportunity to down load to the PC only and also download the full mapset.

Another problem I noticed is when you have actually updated mapsource the map set still shows as 2013.4 however if you go into the product detail it confirms that the map set is 2013.41.

Remember my problem was only with my PC down load got the maps on the unit fairly easily. I did notice whilst playing there is a sub menu in Garmin express to actually do both Unit and PC but I found it by accident so may not be able to repeat next time :blast

But next time I will only use mapupdater.

i keep getting the message this GPS is not eligable for update as previous maps not installed.
Wheres the sub menu on express you mentioned please ?:thumb2

Ah you are getting that from updater or express? I got that message once from updater I think, I remember going into mygarmin and where your downloads are, copying one of those license numbers and using that in updater, instead of it searching for it's self. I think somewhere it asks you if you would like to enter a product number or such like. That should then take you though the whole process.

Bear in mind I did spend 2 days pissing around with this, so please bear with on some of the detail.
