Hi Folks

I currently have a Dell Dimension 2350 desktop PC. It has a Celeron 2.00 GHz processor, 257 MB RAM, 28Gb hard drive running XP Home.

It's beginning to have trouble doing more than one thing at a time, espec when I start firing up Memory Map and Mapsource together. I've set all the Windows management options to optimise for performance instead of appearance, which helps a bit.

So can you advise me whether it's more cost effective to upgrade and if so, what should I go for, can I do it myself?

Or should I buy a new one? And if so what etc etc ...

Yours most gratefully

I'm not a buff and somebody may know better, but It's probably due to lack of ram, depending on what ram is in it depends on how easy it is to obtain, you would probably also struggle to get a processor to speed it up aswell, depending on what socket type it has, check out dell outlet for a bargain, dell are now using vista on all machines they sold all there xp stock to a dealer but I can't remember the site address were thay are being sold cheap.

go for new. Never been a fan of Celeron processors, they don't cope well with muti tasking so that is likley to be your issue.

Go for new :rob

I used to kid myself that I could successfully upgrade a PC with a new motherboard etc.................. BONG! :blast :blast :blast

If you buy a new one, you still have the old one as a backup :thumb2

Al :D

Go for new. Get one with XP as opposed to Vista (unless you can get a deal to get Vista as actual discs).
The PC market is 'giving' stuff away at the moment.

wait .... no, hang on .... yes! - there!

I faintly heard someone say "go for new"

Thanks Fellas - received loud & clear.

Thanks Tuned for the link

Just bought myself a new laptop today, running vista premium. Great piece of kit, more bells and whistles than a bunch of morris dancers :thumb2

Vista is going to take some getting used too :nenau

go here http://www.currys.co.uk/

enter code 589886 in the search box

if you go to buy it... you can enter PRFREEDEL for free delivery

£219.99

Is this a good buy?
Does it come with a built in modem?
Excuse my ignorance - I'm looking for something to work on broadband, store photos and video etc

Personally I’d stick an extra 512mb of RAM in the machine and see what happens. Ebay or Ebuyer are your best bets. If you’re running out of disk space, hard disks are super cheap at the moment too. You should be able to add the RAM and another large(ish) disk for well under £100 + you get to learn a little bit about your PC in the process.
