Always had trouble working out how much UPS I need to keep my MacPro running for a reasonable amount of time.

I bought a Trust 1000VA UPS from maplin and, when the power goes out, it keeps my MacPro and a mid-sized LCD screen going for about 2 mins. Admittedly, there are 6 disk drives in it and a bunch of usb devices, but 2 mins from 1000VA seems pisspoor.

The numpty in the shop (in Thanet, so my hopes weren't high:augie) seemd to think that 2 min to save and exit a modern computer or get the power back was normal.

1000VA only tells you how much load it will carry. You need a Kilowatt-hour (kWh) or Amp-hour (Ah) rating as well inorder to workout how long it will carry the load.

Apparently that's a secret :nenau

Manual says 'backup time = 34-60 min', but I guess if you're smelting aluminium it could be less than that?
