In less than 3 weeks we are supposed to be on our way to Sardinia and Corsica on the bike. Today the MI light came on, then the red urgent service light came on together with the bike in limp mode. I haven’t got a reader or the adapter cable (but will be getting them) or Guzzidiag.

Is there anyone within a shout of Garstang, Lancashire who can loan me something urgently - like tomorrow- so I can start fixing it. Please.

So far I’ve disconnected the battery for an hour or so - no joy, split the switches both sides and sprayed with contact cleaner, pulled the big plug from the dash and sprayed with cleaner. All to no avail.

It’s likely to be water ingress somewhere as I had earlier washed the bike after a 400 mile weekend away to Moffat. It was running brilliantly over the weekend.

The other likely source is the throttle but I can’t immediately see how to split the housing. Some sort of weird screw / nut thing. Battery is on charge just in case. Oil is roughly middle of its range and is fresh.

OBD2 scanner and cable or guzzidiag to lend me anyone?

Austin, I have a code reader and an adaptor cable for a Mandello, which is likely to be the same as for a V85. Unfortunately I am not local but if posted you should have it by end of week. If that's any good let me know.

Hi thanks for the offer. I really don’t think the cable will be the right one. Mines a 2019 E4 model with what is called the 3 pin (actually 6) connectors. I’m pretty sure the mandello is e5 or e5+ so will he a different connection. Thanks though. I’m going to order a cable from Lonelec tomorrow with special delivery for Wednesday and get a decent but standard OBD reader from halfords or somewhere. I should be at least able see what the fault is by Wednesday afternoon.

I think you're right in that case, the one I have is definitely more than 3 pins and yes is E5. Worth a try, fingers crossed for you.

I may have the E4 connector lurking in the garage drawer. I can have a look after I get the foster kids to school, so should know shortly after 9am and will let you know.

I found the leads, but I think it's for the Euro 5 model as it's got the red cap. I have two leads, the OBD and PC connectors. If they are the ones you're after, let me know.

Thanks Sye. The lead on your left is the correct one and can connect to a standard OBD2 scanner, or….. to the lead on the right which is (I think) the lead to further connect to a pc running Guzzidiag - which I don’t have as I don’t have a working laptop.

I have just ordered a 6pin to 16pin adapter (your LH lead) and standard OBD2 reader from Amazon which will be here tomorrow. By the time we’ve sorted the logistics of picking up or posting I might as well wait until tomorrow. But thank you very much for the offer of help.

I think my panic is subsiding and if I don’t feel confident about fixing the bike before we go or that it will unstable when we are there we will change ferry bookings 🤞and go by car (an MX5 so still fun) or our campervan- practical but not fun.

Hoping you get sorted one way or another Austin. Knowing you, I'm sure it'll be done right (y)
Just keep thinking of the sunshine & free flowing vino as you cruise the islands roads :beerjug:

Thanks Steve. I’m pretty sure the fault will lie in one of the handlebar switches or the throttle. But there’s a multitude of things it could be although for it be “urgent service” and limp means it’s serious - it’s the 3rd of three levels of seriousness and limp is at its slowest least revvy too. I guess intended to get you to safely to the side of the road, not to limp to to a dealer 100miles away. The trouble, as ever with Guzzi, is parts are often not instantly available and my confidence is low that it’ll be fixable in 2 weeks.

Now if I’d only invested in luggage for the Griso 😎

The nice, now shiny Breva that we’ve all read about on here has luggage…..your trip would be an excellent shake down for it.
Another Guzzi for your stable…or a rental arrangement perhaps.

Very good idea. I just floated it across MrsW who also thought it could work. She also quite likes the look of the Breva so…..

But, I think I’ve found a smoking gun. Poking about at likely culprits the LH lambda sensor cable and connectors were dripping with water, despite having stood in the sun most of yesterday and this morning. I’ve pulled the connector apart, put the heat gun on low on it for a few minutes to dry it out and given it all a blast with contact cleaner. And left it to dry further. The probe itself is stuck solid in the headers and an open ended spanner will round it, I can’t get my lambda socket on as there’s no clearance. I need a 22mm ring spanner with a small cut out to get round the cable. Or an O2 eliminator kit and just leave the lambda in place. I will know for certain when Amazon deliver tomorrow.

Lambda probe at Gutsibits is £181. Eeek.

Fixed it, I fixed it. 🕺🕺🍾🍾🍾 whoop whoop whoop.

Code reader arrived this afto and immediately found a fault - used the Ferrari coding - which wouldn’t clear. One of the Guzzi tech forums has a list of codes = electronic throttle problem. Brill I’ve got the old non-heated grips in a drawer somewhere. Half an hour later the old throttle is on, ignition on - no “urgent service” warning and a few seconds later with the code reader and no Mil light either. Woohoo we are cooking with gas. I left the LH grip in place but unplugged it just in case that threw another wobbly at the ECU.

Our Sardinia/ Corsica trip is back on for now. Sadly it means I haven’t got an excuse to buy that gorgeous Breva - which the nice Mr @nicholsonj2252 had just about agreed to sell to me if I needed it.

That’s excellent news….and I’m sure that you do actually ‘need’ the Breva 😉

Can ask which OBD scanner you have?
Deal for Prime members: MOTOPOWER MP69040 Car OBD2 Scanner Code Reader Engine Fault Code Reader Scanner CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool for All OBD II Protocol Cars - Yellow https://amzn.eu/d/ddfYkkN. But it’s not really very good. Very limited functionality for the bike.

And for Guzzi/ Aprilia and others with a 6pin diagnostic port
Euro5 6Pin OBD Motorbike Adaptor,6 Pin Motor Bike Motorrad Diagnostic OBD2 Motorcycle K-Line CAN-Bus Cable for Yama-ha Hon-da Su-zu-ki BENE-LLI https://amzn.eu/d/95jz99K

Thankyou Austin. I have the leads already, but my cheap OBDII scanner causes the engine light to come on when attached to my V85TT. it works fine in my car though.

Only to discover that when I removed the LH switchgear I had managed to cross thread the mirror on refitting it and it came loose today. I long spring of stripped out thread accompanied the mirror when I removed it. Bugger. Helicoil on order. It’s M10 metric fine (1.25 pitch) fyi.
