Urgent: temp replacement for oil cap

This is the part number

11127677368

in exchange for some pics of the "fix" :D

It will be hard to seal, there is a bit of pressure in there as you see from leaky gaskets. Good luck.

Part on ebay Spain describes thread size as BMW M34x1,5x6 mm

Shouldn't pressurise that much, the crankcases are vented back into the airbox on Hexheads via a breather pipe beneath the LH cylinder .

Stating the obvious I would be wary of what to use as a bung, don't want bits of tin foil etc floating around and blocking oil ways.

Easy to go from the frying pan into the fire on this one.

He can just go to a motor factors shop and buy a sump plug and gasket/washer.
This isn't a major drama to overcome whilst away.

Nearest dealer 80 km.

Why not despatch a duty hero, 50 miles there, 50 miles back, call it 3 hour round trip.

Fit part, carry on normal jogging….

Wine bottle stopper of the silicone variety.
Cork will give you oily floaters = Bad

Drive easy until you get to a place that sells a proper oil cap.
Note: some people have had issues with universal ones, make sure you buy a proper one.

Thanks all for the help and banter. :)

We (group of people this time) split.
Because of the shit weather they all proceeded directly towards next destination (near Leon) and the guy with the cork rode through to the dealer and bought a few spares ;)

Cork and 20 meters gaffa tape apprently work.

I did stay behind as I wanted to ride between Sotres and Espiñana. I just came back down to Potes, awaiting another guy that is on the asphalt route and we will be on our way to meet the others later today.

We have a few ridiculous pictures of the “fix” will post shortly. :D :D :D

UKGSers very own episode of MacGuyver..... :D

I bought an alloy oil filler cap from Wunderlich/Touratech when I had my Hexhead (then swapped it over onto my 1250 when I traded).

I much prefer a stout metal item with a simple Torx female in it to that stupid plastic BMW item that needs a special three-legged key to undo.

I’ve never once used the bmw plastic tool , and I’ve been working on the 1200’s since they came out in 2004 :D

I used a 32mm ring spanner on mine for years until I spotted a cheap plastic 3/4" socket that fitted it on AliExpress.
The only time I've used the stock tool is if I'm away in far off lands and need a top up. Usually if oil bought in said foreign lands too. 🤔🤭

The Bodge :D :D :D

Didn't leak (that surprised me) or disintegrate inside the egine, apparently.
I met the group back in Leon this evening (new cap) all good.

I spent the morning on my own in some proper British weather instead :)

Should be nicer from tomorrow.
Few more days and back home.

If I could only have one thing in the toolkit it would be a roll of tape 🤣

What is the padding out material? Looks like tissue.

Good fix!

I always tour with an assortment of cable ties and some tape just in case something rattles loose......

Years ago I lost the gear lever pinch bolt on my Yamaha Thundercat whilst rapidly approaching the Liss roundabout heading North on the A3 from Portsmouth. Panic set in as I couldn't feel the shift lever to downshift. Through feathering the brakes and clutch I managed to coast onto the roundabout and exit in 6th gear at 30mph up to the Bordon exit slip road, where I repurposed a subframe bolt to reattach the gear lever and continue the journey.

Anyone who doesn't carry those will regret it one day.

Had the centre stand spring snap whilst riding through Switzerland. Some cable ties kept that up until I got another on my return home.
