I'm off to the US next month and could potentially pick up a cheap 2610\2620 while out there. Has anyone done this and know where to then get the UK map CD from and how much that is?
Unless you already have the UK maps or plan to use your 2610 more in the US than in Europe, it really isn't worth buying a US-spec 2610.

I've got a US 2610 and I'm happy with it. But as Greg says, it's not much use buying one if you have to buy the European City Navigator too ($550).
I am sharing the maps with my brother in law, who has a Euro SPIII. As you may know, the maps can be used on two units. In theory you are only allowed to do this if both units are yours.

As it happens, mine is also a US 2610, but I also have an SPIII, so I have access to the maps.
Buying a cheapo SPIII could be a route in, but you MUST ensure that the ownership registration can be transferred by Garmin (for which you need the vendor's full cooperation).
