USB adaptor

Friend has Street Pilot III, Mapsource and lap-top computer, but he says the lap-top doesn't have a serial port only USB. Therefore he can't use his serial port connector to upload routes, waypoints etc. He has to use the data card programmer.

I haven't seen the lap-top, but it seems strange that it wouldn't have a serial port connection, however if that is the case can you get USB-RS232 (male) adaptors. If so would it work and where do you get them from?

Increasingly, laptops are being marketed without serial ports.

why bother ? just load it in mapsource - d/l to USB in 1/10 time and its done.

But that's the point. If the route is downloaded to the chip via the USB then when you go to Route on the Garmin Unit it's not there!
Are we doing something wrong?

Maps are loaded onto data cards via the USB programmer. Routes are loaded into the Streetpilot via the serial port cable.

So what is Motomartin on about?

That was always my understanding - maps via USB, routes, waypoints - serial port.
