Hi, I fear this may be the dumbest question ever but what is thought as the best way of running an iPhone off the LC? Do you guys go via the power socket with an adaptor (if so what/which) or do you hard wire an optional USB socket to leave the power socket free so to speak?
Thanks, never had a bike before, in all my years, where actually using a phone or listing to tunes might be an option. Thank you.
Graham

I was using a usb adaptor in the charging socket but it was a bit hit and miss and didn't have a solid connection. So I bought something like this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Motorcycle-...=merchant-items&ie=UTF8&qid=1393704016&sr=1-5

but made by 'winding roads'. (Can't find one on the net - bought it from adventure bike warehouse in Sudbury ... )

Works very well, fused, independent switch, LED light to let you know it's on .... easy to wire up ... :thumb2

Gramshep, when thinking about the best way to charge your phone on your steed, consider:

(A) How often and for how long you use your bike. All day, every day? Once a week? A bit each weekend and for two weeks each summer?

(B) How often you really need to answer your phone or make a call when riding your bike.

I guess that you'll use your phone no more often than you use it when off your bike? I guess that you are off your bike more often than you are on it? I guess that you don't walk around all day with your phone charging?

I guess that in 'all your years' of not having a phone on your motorcycles, you haven't really missed not having one, or you'd have had found a way of charging one.... It's only electricity and all bikes have that, even your Speed Tripple.

If I am correct in all my guesses, it's more than likely that you do not need to charge your phone whilst riding at all, or at least not very often. It's more than likely that you do not really need to do nothing more than putting your phone into your pocket, tankbag or copious panniers, leaving it in silent sleep mode (or better still off, as it will not drain the battery at all) only taking it out when you reach your destination of (depending on the usual usage of your steed) Vienna, Helsinki, Timbuktoo or your local branch of Tesco.

Blokes charging phones, blokes charging iPads. Ride your bike to free yourself of all concerns of the outside world, communication and information overload... Feel alive!

Away for a couple of weeks, as opposed to a couple of hours? Take a simple travel mains charger and charge the device up whilst you sleep; one simple plug and maybe two simple leads will charge a phone and an iPad, I carry mine in my very small spongebag. Hotel electricity you've paid for part of the bill, so use it! Stop in a cafe in Barnsley or St Perdue du Lost (or even the world's smartest restaurant) and ask the proprietor if you can use a tiny bit of his juice to charge your phone; they never say no. Trust me.

PS If you really feel you must charge your phone and gabble away whilst you hoon your awesome steed from A to C via B down every twisty road or mud plug down a goat track, at least do it properly. Powerlet make some really nice connectors, charging points etc. They have UK agents, too. Buy and use with confidence.

He might want to intentionally forget to charge it overnight , be late for wherever he needs to go in the morning and not have time to charge the phone so he can demonstrate to his mates how versatile the GS is by being able to charge electrical items whilst on the fly.

What? He hasn't armed himself with a Nav V, SD card and fifty versions of Spinal Tap's 'Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight' (played at 11 on the dial, natch).

The man is no biker!

+ point.......iPhone satnav app can be updated without Garmin Express. :augie

My Triumph Explorer had a hella power socket incorporated within the top box, it was all standard triumph kit, and came built-in to the top box, as you fitted the top box it automatically connected itself to the bikes power supply. It was quite a useful idea, and one that could be adapted to a GS pannier or top box if you don't mind drilling your boxes and having a short loom from the box to a rear mounted socket on the bike, so you could plug and play. Just another idea!

Hi There,

I use my iPhone in a Biologic case as my satnav / music etc. and charging on the bike is very important. My phone ran out on the way the Cafe Hockley yesterday and I was 20 mins late for my GSer breakfast.

Nippy Norman stock this which I'm about to order:

http://www.nippynormans.com/product...ockets/item/universal-usb-socket-kit-bas-usb2

This is also very useful for listening to the directions and not staring at your handlebars, it also has a built in FM radio.

Cheers,

Trixie .... I have taken to using the I- phone Tom Tom sat nav. The winding roads option is excellent when yer in the middle of nowhere ...

Kritou, did you add your own hella plug? On the link it shows the part with bare wire ends but no plug, or have I found the wrong one?

Sorry, should have made it clear, it was my own plug

My experience of iphones was that they drunk juice from batteries like pissheads downing lager on pay day. Always needing chargeups.

All the above may be true but I do plug mine into the socket and charge my iPhone when im using the iPhone mount with the SAT NAV running this uses lots of power so a charger in this case is needed

FWIW, I bought a couple of these:-

A mate of mine fabricated a robust bracket for me which attaches via the same bolt:-

I can then plug in any devices to charge via usb when I'm on the move, and the devices sit snugly in my tank bag.

Listening to music/speaking with SWMBO is achieved via blue tooth thru the Scala device.
