Used bikes and VAT ...

Cars not bikes

Dont forget when you do pay vrt you are able claim lot back. also if you go in with a high vrt price, they are basing it on the incorrect prices.

print few adds off and go look here you daft twit, these are what the same year and model sell for. they will usually refund you the diff and then go claim for the rest.

get around 30% back

I agree with you that we shouldn't be getting double charged. VAT paid in one country should be the end of it.

On what you've said above though, most of it is relevant to cars and other vehicles, NOT motorbikes. There are set rates for motorcycles and these are based on engine size and age not value or "open market selling price".

Don't run it up on a rig, let someone enjoy burning that fuel. I've had a bike on UK plates on Irish insurance for three months while I ran up mileage to get over this problem. And that was after taking it to the VRT office. They practically told me to go away and come back in three months with the mileage right.

cheers mate

yeah he is not going to pay the 1k, so I will setup a rig in my garage, and run the 3k up on it over the course of a week or so.... and maybe a quick trip to the uk... then come back to them with it at a later date...with a different person (family member or me probably) reg the bike and then change it over to him...

It doesnt matter what you do now. The Horse has bolted.
When you Submitted the Bike for inspection , the Chassis/frame number
was recorded , as were your personal details ,, your pps that you had to
give them . If i may , i can confirm one more wee relevant point here ,
you have now also committed an offence , you presented a foreign registerd
bike to pay the duties due , and you didnt pay them. At the very most
you have 30 days ,to pay. The customs will allow you to remove the bike
from the State , with suitable proof. They DO NOT have to afford you this ,but usually do. Having wasted some time reading the Drivel above , about Changing the dash board , dont kid yourself , if you get caught and they WILL check , you will get yourself into a right royal mess , i do believe its fraud, and its against the state , so its a biggie.
Now , it doesnt matter who takes the Bike with what milage , YOU owe the state the Duty and the Vat. If that particular bike is EVER presented to
customs to be imported that money is due.
You can ,however dispute the payment of VAT twice , i have a letter
from HM customs and Excise telling me that the Customs in "Eire" should
not have charged the VAT twice. But they did , the saga continues.

I dont know you from adam , but if you ever listened to a piece of advice .. Heed this.
DO NOT F UCK ABOUT WITH CUSTOMS AND EXCISE. Pay the Money and appeal the payment.
Its questionable ,whether or not you can remove the bike from the state. I would BE SURE ,before i do it,and if possible
get it in writing from your local customs that its OK with them . This is more a courtesey ,in FACT they do not have to allow.
Its Simple , THE BILL IS YOURS AND IT STANDS.

PM me if ye want mey number , i will talk ye thru it . But its pretty much what i say above.
I have the phone number of the guy that is taking the Customs/state to the Eu courts , he will tell you the same , but you can talk to him too

well said and sounds right from my knowledge as a cage dealer

no I see what you are saying, and I have heard enough stories from people about how utterly black and white they are about collecting money.. and how utterly ruthless they can be in going about getting it to

and agree with your points 100%... I was onto a nice lady in the revenue who said quite correctly told me also.

The bike cannot be sold under any conditions or have ownership transferred in Ireland
but if he chooses not to pay the VAT the bike must be removed from the state immediately.

I gave my buddy all the options I could think of and that others provided, including a few that we were throwing about (bringing the bike back to the UK, new owner, then bringing it back in with a different person with higher mileage)

I don't think he will go for any of them to be honest, I think he is so gutted he will sell the bike.. cause he is so pissed off I cant see him paying the VAT
such a shame.. lovely bike it was..

ah well.. thanks to all for their opinions... always good to have them
:beerjug:

Not necessarily!!

When I ran into a bit of difficulty, I asked what piece of legislation was relevant. It took them 24 hours to get back to me with the relevant VAT act.

Bottom line here is that because the majority of vehicles have to be presented in the State before they can be accurately assessed for VAT and VRT (two separate pieces of legislation with two different conditions attached) there is DEFINITELY a window of opportunity to remove the vehicle from the state. You DO NOT have to pay and import the vehicle just because you have presented it. However, I think the window of opportunity to remove it from the State is only 24 hours. So, if you have given them any reason to believe the vehicle has remained in the State, you are donald ducked.
