Lin and I will be in Moroc in mid May or a bit later.

I already asked a couple of people here about innoculations and we're still undecided.

A girl who works there for the Peace Corp told us not to bother if we're only there for a couple of weeks.
Another couple going with us aren't going to bother.

What do most of you blokes do?
Get innoculated for everything you can or nothing at all and dont drink the water?
(Which is what the Peace Corp gal said.)

Cheers: Jaq.

The knowledgebase has info on innoculations, it's likely you will have had the essential ones (tetanus, polio, HepA) anyway. There's no more risk in Morocco than Spain.

Drinking 'town water' is perfectly safe, Morocco's ONEP (Org Nat Eau Portable) is as competent as any European water company and last year had a $700m capital spend. You'll know you are in a town water area because of the blue-topped inspection hatches by the sides of roads. Be careful however outside of towns as some of the wells don't have filters.

Jaq....common sense rules here.

We advise all of our customers not to drink tap water- as Tim says, the town water tends to be pretty good but that's a only quality thing- the water is still 'different' and will give people upset stomachs although it is usually safe as far as bacteria and pollutants go.

I've found that a sensible compromise is the best way....by all means (we tell our customers) clean teeth and wash normally in tap water (in towns) but unless you're used to it, don't drink it (I do, my staff do and I've no doubt Tim does but we're used to it).

The risk of getting the 'Marrakech express' dramatically increases as the temperature does.....on the last trip that I came back from two weeks ago, only one person had to use a diarrhoea tablet and he was fine in 24 hours...on a trip last summer though, everyone (bar me :D) had it to some degree....two quite badly.

I guess it's because food storage is less stringent there, and bugs and algaes grow much faster in the hot weather :nenau

You can go too far....we've had some people reluctant to eat salads which is a real shame as Moroccan salad is wonderful stuff....missing out on eating it because it's been washed in local water is a shame and IMO a bit unnecessary as everything you eat from has been washed in local water as well- you'd be depriving yourself of some seriously nice food by getting too worried if you didn't eat it IMO.

Bottled water is cheap- there'll be a shop in every single village that does bottled (and sealed) water- it's 5dh from a shop or you can pay 15dh from a hotel....Sidi Ali also do 5 litre bottles for 9dh and they're marked up at that on their labels so that's the cheapest way of getting fresh bottled water outside of a town.

Whatever you do, DO NOT drink water from streams unless you KNOW you're very very close to the source- villages empty their sewage into them and Bilharzia (a parasitic flatworm infestation) is fairly common in some areas.

We've seen (European) people fill water bottles from the river in the Todra gorge and drink it....there are probably 40+ villages above that location whose waste gets fed into that river and drinking it is just plain silly IMO....we even advise people against washing their faces in that sort of water- personally I don't even soak my buff for hot weather in it, I use bottled water.

As for other inoculations, as Tim said, it's covered in the knowledge base......Rabies is an increasing problem in Morocco and several Europeans have contracted it there in the last few years....Personally though I haven't had a rabies jab though (and won't for the foreseeable future) and again, common sense rules.....don't go near any stray dogs who look ill, or any at all if you want to be totally safe)

I've had Tetanus boosts, Polio and the various Hep jabs- I've also had Yellow fever inoculations as well but that was for a trip to Senegal/Gambia where it is a problem,- there have been a few isoltated yellow fever outbreaks in Morocco but it's not listed as a yellow fever risk by the W.H.O

In short, common sense rules

:)

EDIT...I forgot to add what I tell our customers at briefings.....I'm not qualified to give the advice and it's all based on experience- if in any doubt you should consult your own doctor or properly qualified professionals yada yada yada yada :D

So did the dog know it was in danger? :)

The other thing you can do before you go is to have a 'course' of probiotic yoghurts to promote the good bacteria. Much less likely to have stomach problems.

Eat where the locals eat is another good pointer (unless they are rolling around clutching their stomachs).

Tim

We have followed the "eat where the locals eat" from Morocco to Vietnam - and it does appear to work.

Admittedly in the far east it is very odd sitting down on tiny stools to eat - but the food is usually first class. Some of our best meals in Vietnam were £1 jobs where the place was full of locals.

The places that have made me the most ill - have been those you would think wouldn't - in fact the only time I was ill in Morocco was after eating in one of the "Palace" restaurants. Everywhere else was fine. We had no problems on the main square in Marrakech (guess who bottled the spelling) and we had some fantastic meals with local families in their homes.

As for water - caution says teeth and washing - and it has worked pretty well for us.

However, like the stock market, past experience is no guarantee to future experience. :P

Thanks for the info guys.

Nobody has Hepatitus A or B innoculations inside Oz.
So that's all new to us.
Rabies is non-existent here.

Tetanus shots: had that few times. been bitten by spiders and snakes and lizards and...well...the list is long. :D
Diptheria and Polio...not since I was a kid in the UK.
I don't think they even do Diptheria and Polio in Oz anymore.
They have never done TB either.

How come you lot are so germy? ;)

Off to see our Doc in the morning.
See what he reckons.

Cheers: Jaq.

Massive Meningitis outbreak in Africe, has now reached southern morocco.

I'm off to get vacinated in the morning.

I go like 10 times a year to Morocco at every time of the year and never get sick, but still would never drink tube water, always water from sealed bottles. Tube water in the hotels is fine to brush your teeth but that´s it.Don´t drink it if you didn´t live in the jungle before for couple years.Every third person that goes to Morocco still gets dodgy stomac, even taking precautions.

We got a number of shots, thanks to advice posted here.
Hep A, Typhiod, Salmonela in one arm and Tetanus, Diptheria in the other arm.
Plus a ton of prescription drugs to take with us on our 3 month trip.

Thanks to all who offered advice.

Cheers: Jaq.

This is all useful stuff . . . . cheers guys :thumb2

As Tim and another person suggested we've started eating Yakult probiotic yoghurt.
Hoping to line the stomach with good bacteria.
I'm thinking of just buying chocolate?
I mean it's a food source yeah? :thumb:D
