Can any tell me the recommended way of removing a Valeo starter from an 89 GS. There appears to be very little room around the bolts.

They are a total bollix I usually replace the bolts with M8 Allen bolts You can get a ball end socket in pretty easy

But Yes the smaller socket you can use the better

But Before you go hauling out the starter do the Diagnostic bit first!

If you leave an trickle charger on it and try to start in the morning does it turn over quickly as it does when hot? (You can also make sure the battery is charged and just undo the negative terminal at the battery and reconnect in the morning and then try to start)

Yes it turns over fine! Then its battery related and since that was a good battery I got for you something has to be sucking electric and the main culprits are Diode board or added accessories, Does that camera use bike electrics?

No It still turns over slowly and I know the battery is charged

Valeo starters are geared and unless they have missing teeth or a magnet dropping off and holding the armature from turning freely they usually fire over great and if yours spins over quickly when the Battery is charged? Then it is likely to be fine

My "Aldi" 1/4 socket and ratchet did the job for me a few weeks ago. It was the only one small enough to fit in the cramped space.
Unglued magnets was my problem.

I've probably got a suitable tool for the job - drop in to me. ;)
