Valve Clearance check at 12000 miles..

Apologies if this has been discussed before but do they really need to be done at the 12,000 mile service?

Please, do not apologise it is better to seek advice rather than appear stupid after the event.
Why would you not want to check them, it isn't difficult to do.

I know BMW = Break My Wallet and at £455
for the 12,000 mile service I wonder if i can just save a fortune and do it myself... Oil change and filter, final drive oil, air filter and plugs plus check all the rest (breaks etc). Maybe I should have a read up on the valve checks and see how easy/difficult it is.
The only issue then is 'service history' for my 2014 GSA..
Many modern engines do not need valve adustment. But it's also true that a lot of engines when they go out of adjustment they tighten and that leads to damage to valves and seats at least. So while many may not need adjustments they definitely need checking. The oil head was famous for exhaust valve problems if left unchecked. JJH
No reason, why if your methodical and know which end of a spanner to use you cannot do it. I keep the receipt for all the service parts used on my gsa so that any future purchaser can see what was done and when. The difficulty is, if new to the idiosyncrasies of bmw's you may not fully appreciate what is/is not really important or difficult to do.
However there are several very good independents, on here, who not only for cost but also quality can put most main dealer's to shame.
Search Wapping, from here, as a starting point. I'm not a customer but he has an excellent reputation.

Just looked up a YT video on valve clearance checks... looks straight forward really especially if doing the oil change as well. I am a bit OCD when working on the bike.. check, check and check again
so i may well be ok.

It worked for me and I didn't even have to pay for the 600 mile service so I treated the old girl to a Gearshift Assist Pro

They did the corrosion inspection on mine at the 12k service, so I had to pay for it, although it "only" cost about £280
At least I didn't get charged for the oil change on the new engine

I've just had my annual service (2nd year) at 8K miles.
Dealer said to get the valves checked at the next service, whether that's in a year or at 14K miles.

So how many of those that have covered enough miles has had to have the valves reset, mine was ok at last services 12,000 and again ok at 18 next service at 24,000 and assume they will need adjusting buy then.
So what miles were yours adjusted at.

Well, have ordered everything i need for the service so will be doing it myself (with a little help from a friend who is mechanically minded ). Looking forward to it and of course the extra +£350 in my pocket which no doubt will probably get spent on more farkles at some point...

£350+ saved ??
Cotswold quoted me £360 for my next service including the Valve check.
was quoted £455 from Vines of Guildford.....That's why i'm doing it myself.
But surely if they then need adjustment you have to order the correct shims required to bring them back in to spec. So do you then leave the bike in bits waiting ?
Or put it back together and take valve covers off again once the shims arrive
