I'm just on with checking my valve clearances and need some help.

I've just adjusted the rocker arm axial play and have got it to 0.1mm, no problems there.

However, I can't for the life of me figure out where the feeler gauges are inserted to check the valve clearance. I've read Steptoes guide, watched Jim Vob Badens DVD, and the BMW service DVD and consulted my Haynes manual, but there is no detailed picture of where the feeler guages are actually inserted. I can't find any discernable gap to insert a feeler guage.I understand how to adjust them using the 10mm spanner and the allen key, and know the correct measurements, but where do the bloody feeler guages get inserted !!??

Can anyone post a picture ?

Hope somebody can help

Cheers

Andy

Just under the nut. With the engine in the correct place (the arrow thingy for the right hand side valves) there's 'wobbly' thing just underneath the nut. The feeler gauge goes on top of the wobbly bit.

Hope that helps...

Thanks for that.......but what's the arrow thingy ?

Mate - step away from the valve adjustment and pay someone to do it for you if the following pic means nothing...

Right, I see. I didn't know there was an arrow that indicated TDC, it's not mentioned in the instructions I've got. I used Steptoes method of inserting a thin screwdriver into the cylinder head, then bumping the wheel round until the screwdriver comes all the way out to find TDC.

Thanks

Andy

Make sure both valves are closed. There is then a gap between the end of the valves and the adjuster that is connected to the rocker arm. The red circle is misleading.:thumb

Only works when on the compression stroke, not the exhaust stroke. :augie

if you don't know the difference put the tools down and step away from the bike. :D

I had a day free today, as my Wife took our little girl to see her Grandad, so i thought I'd give the valve clearance and rocker arms another go, for practice, as we're servicing my Brothers bike next week. The whole job took 35 minutes from valve covers off to valave covers back on again. I really enjoyed it too....it's a piece of piss when you know how to do it :D
