My 2013 GSA has just come up to it's 2nd Birthday with 11,700 miles on it, so thought it was about time to give it a service. (During warranty it was done at BMW main dealer at 600 miles and 6,000 miles / 12 months).

Checking the valve clearance cold, both exhaust valves on the left were 0.38mm, and both on the right were 0.35mm (within the 0.30mm ti 0.040mm tolerance). However, when I checked the inlet valves, all four were just 0.05mm, with the spec being 0.13mm to 0.23mm. I'm struggling to believe that all four valves have gone out by exactly the same amount, neither do I think the shims would have been changed at its 1 year / 6,000 mile service ??

Any of you seen the same? Has the clearance spec recently been changed? Bike runs absolutely fine and I'm tempted to think they have been like this from new, so not planning on fitting 0.1mm thiner shims just at the moment, but would appreciate any thoughts you have on this.....

Thanks, Roy.

If they are out then adjust them. Tighter than spec and you could end up burning out the valves and seats. Why risk it?

You haven't accidentally picked up a 5 thou feeler by mistake (0.005") ?

(five thou being almost 0.13mm ?)
