I'm looking at doing the 24000 mile service myself, the only job I havn't done before are the valve clearances. My question is although the schedule says to inspect them every 6000m, is this really necessary? or is this just the excuse the dealer uses to charge you £180 for an oil change on the minor service?

Cheers

What i did on KTM EXC is do all the basic service oil/air filter change etc myself and get a local bike garage to check adjust the valves for me they would charge me £15 :thumb2

Screw and locknut. Very easy. Usually after 12k, most stay stable and will not need adjusting. Good luck.:)

Be VERY careful that the rubber gasket that seals around the spark plug holes doesn't move when you refit the rocker covers after checking the valves:-

I tried to tease my LH rocker cover back on past my H-B engine bars (too lazy to slacken the engine bars first time) and upset this rubber seal, and then ended up with a trouser leg covered in oil after the test ride. I then had to re-do the job properly a second time plus degrease and wash my trousers.:blast
