MyRoute’s ‘best practice’ advice, is to have a shaping point every five kilometres / three miles. This is easily done, using the expand function.

Here’s how:

When creating routes, MyRoute, who should know what they are talking about, recommend placing a shaping point every 5 km or 3 miles. This is to help the GPS device pin the route in place. Their mantra is ‘Just have enough’.

This might be tedious but MyRoute will do it for you, using Gold subscription’s expand function. This sits alongside the reduce function.

I used the expand function to create my two journeys across France / Belgium and Luxembourg into Germany, from Le Mans to Cochem. Neither leg was under 200 miles; they both worked perfectly on my iPhone, up to and including a forced deviation of several miles, due to a road closure.
