no pishing about with chains took me away from hondas, have had a transalp out for years then came over to the gs 
Being as you asked.
There are 3 things I don't like about the Varadero.
1 It is chain drive
2 It was a very thirsty bike. I understand the latest bikes are much better.
3 In my opinion it is a bland ugly looking bike, too much Tupperware. When I first saw the 1200GS I thought it was going down the same way with the plastic side panels.
If you like yours who cares what anyone else thinks.

I've made quite a few good friends during the last 4 years since starting up this forum, had some good piss-ups and some great rides together.
I've not had a Varadero for a couple of years now but I've continued with the site because of the people who make up the Varadero group, the banter, etc.
Now it seems that I'm accused of making excessive amounts of money from the site to fund regular European holidays.
The truth is that I'm not making money from the site and as I'm not making money it's no financial loss to me if the site closes.
So as of Friday 7th December 2007 the site will close.
Best wishes to you all, I'm sure our paths will cross in the future.

I signed up a long time ago. Thought about buying one once
Without knowing the history it looks like it didn't take much to make Red decide to close... if he hasn't had a Varadero for a couple of years perhaps it was just that he's lost interest, and this was the catalyst to move on

My Dad was trying to make me go for the new vara but i just dont like the looks however they are great to ride. But i hated the idea of seeing someone with a GS and then thinking i should of went for one and then regret buying a vara.
Also i am 23 and the vara seems marketed to people who are a bit older where as the GS has an ageless appeal.

The varadero was defo on my shortlist of bikes before I bought the GS, which was pretty much:
1200GS
VstromGT
Varadero
FJR
1200RT
basis for these bikes were doing mostly two up riding and me being tall. In the end I eliminated the Varadeo based on the finances of it. for me it sits in between the GS and Vstrom. Price wise and build quality/looks wise. For me, it either made sense to buy a new GS dream bike, high price but high residuals, or a slightly used Vstrom, Very capable bike for touring, and benefits from high depreciation making a used one a huge saving over the GS. The vardero sat right in the middle being fairly highly priced, and there weren't many used models around, meaning not alot of used bargains.
TBH, I really liked the varadero, especialy the tri colour version. The seat was dead comfy, and the missus liked the comfort, but hated the looks.
In the end, like I said, our decision was either a used Vstrom, or a new GS. I'm very glad we followed our heart

Just had a look and there were 4 users on the site and 30 guests........that'll be all us lot having a nose then .
The Vara site was a really useful site, same as here it was used to meet up and have a good number of ride outs per year.
It is a pitty it is closing but thats life - there has always been quite a diverse group and some of the stronger members heavily favoured the off road scene. Thats the way it goes though those off roaders were usually the ones organising the runs. We tried to rekindle the organisation of runs with new ideas and even overseas run opportunities but there seemed to be little interest so those wishing to "stay on tarmac" drifted slighly.
Red did trade in his Vara - firstly for a Pan then for a BMW K1200GT I have to say he is a good bloke who has had a lot to put up with the last few years and has kept it all together. Even though the comments that were made towards him were unfounded and actually made in jest I can understand his feelings - i have known him a while and he is a man of principle.
A sorry state but the rest of the members will miss it when its gone, all i can say if they had used it more and got out more then the activity would have outwayed the critics.
