The past Cologne motorcycle show or Intermot, Alpha Racing has unveiled a new cylinder head for the boxer engines with variable valve timing. Dickie had a word with them on the stand. 146PS the press publication says but it is still a prototype. More horsepower is possible when the kit is released to the public. For those who don't know Alpha Racing, they have been involved with BMW for a long time now. Also did the support for Mr Dunlop of TT fame and was involved with the WSBK bikes.

Linky but brush up on your German.

If more power is the objective in order to compete in marketing terms (because it certainly won't make us Joe Plonkers any faster), then why doesn't BMW enlarge the engine to say 1500?

Probably because of the weight of 2 fecking great pistons going in opposite directions would start causing balance and vibration problems.
I'm sure an engineer will be along to correct my assumptions any second now.

I think this nothing to do with BMW, it is just an after market item like an exhaust, albeit an expensive one.

Might be needed in future to maintain performance and meet emissions and noise reg's?

BMW has been rumoured to be testing the tech for the next model. We will have to wait and see.

The bigger the pistons the lower the max rpm will be. Power needs rpm and torque needs capacity.
