Would you say £795 was a decent price for 2 panniers, top box, back rest and rack fitting bracket? (All parts brand new)

I would of thought that is a good price for new, as long as it has all the fittings you need including rear peg holders if you haven't got them?

Yes, if they're new and from a dealer/come with the guarantee. I bought mine here and the UK dealers I contacted wouldn't price match and for the full monty they're currently asking circa £900

Are the locks codeable or not as there's 2 options here-the locks you can program to match your ignition key and the ones that come with their own key.

It's easy to recode locks to your ignition key. You may need to scrounge some of the coding plates from your dealer - there are only about 3 variations.

It must be a sign of the times that people think £900 for three breadbins is good value. Personally, I would never have panniers as I think they look crap. When I go touring, my Givi 47 litre topbox and a strap on Lomo bag is plenty. Cost for all this, less than £150.

My first set of touring luggage for the GS was a Ventura rack with a big bag from Hein Gericke which was/is far superior to the Ventura bag. Cost for this lot, less than £150 as I already had the bag and the pack rack from a previous bike.

What he said!

I have BMW Alu panniers but hardly ever use them, firstly they make the bike too wide you tend to fill them with stuff you don't need.

For a weekend away you only need a backpack any longer and I use my top box and Lomo bag plenty of room with both. :thumb

I have a pair of brand new various panniers, never fitted and I wouldn't pay that for them, I think they're rubbish.

I have vario's incltop box & use a combination depending upon the journey, cant agree with your comment, being able to run narrow width for the daily commute allows good filtering - try that with standard panniers you will come unstuck. quality good / functionality brilliant. Panniers £510 new from williams Manchester if you ask niceley

I agree top box ,panniers and inserts were brill for a weeks tour 2 up around the highlands!

:thumb2 This guy is so right, and that's why I've been using vario's on my Adventure, it makes filtering so much easier, quicker and safer!

I couldn't agree more. I always tour two-up, so I need the capacity but try to avoid expanding them if only touring for a long weekend.

Panniers also put the weight in the right place, whereas a heavily loaded top box pushes the centre of gravity too high and too far back, so screws up the handling

I've used my Varios for 4 and a half years now and found them pretty good. If you think you might drop your bike (i.e. actually offroading on a trip) then the metal ones make more sense, but otherwise the Varios (with liners) are very practical and much better for filtering with. The expanding mechanisms could be smoother but still all work fine, although it's rare I ever have them expanded apart from the top box.
