Vario Top Box Dimensions

Could someone do me a massive favour and tell me the dimensions of the GS Vario Top Box ? Current version for 2015 GS?

I have chopped in my GS for an XR and the luggage went with it, I now need to get a new top box, but buying on line it is hard to gauge size, so need a benchmark.

Glad to help I have just changed from the Varios to Givi Trekkers and before doing so measured all the capacities, here they are:-

Vario T/B (expanded) 35 litres (1 f/f helmet)
Vario L/H (expanded) 39 litres (1 f/f helmet)
Vario R/H (expanded) 29 litres
total 103 litres



The dimensions for the trekkers I bought

Top box 58 litres (2 f/f helmets)
L/H box 48 litres (1 f/f helmet)
R/H box 37 litres
total 143 litres

As a matter of interest I had to weigh the Varios because I recently posted them them to a buyer they added up to 21kg's

Here is a surprise though, the Trekker boxes weigh less than the Vario boxes, Trekkers were 18.5 kg's but then you have to add the weight of the mounting hardware to the trekkers (not needed with the Varios) which I did not weight but probably will add a few kilo's so effectively the two options weigh virtually the same when fitted, if you did want metal boxes there is a lot to gain capacity wise and not much to loose apart from the obvious filtering problems.

I did not consider the BMW metal luggage option because of the small top box.

Thanks omnione, but I should have said I meant that H/L/D dimensions, because litres is good, but it doesn't tell you the shape. I have looked at the trekker for the XR, but probably going to go for the V47, but with SW Motech mountings as the givi mounting plate looks a bit naff.

The weights are surprising but I guess it may be because of the mechanism??

The Top box is roughly 47cm wide by 37cm deep by either 26cm (unexpanded) or 32cm (expanded) high

Hi, can anyone let me know the measurement of the alloy panel on the Vario top box, from bottom of rolled edge to other side bottom of rolled edge and with from plastic edge to plastic edge? Many Thanks

Not trying to hijack the thread, but can you get all black vario panniers/ top box ?
I see it says “comes with” aluminium plate so i was wondering if that just stuck on somehow ?

Short answer is no. The Black parts of the panniers are plastic, the sides, top and bottoms are Aluminium. You could get them vinyl wrapped though if you don't like the ali

If only I'd looked first, I was thinking of the GSA panniers not the various

It's only the outside of the lids on the panniers that have the Ali covers. The rest is plastic. I've looked inside and There are screws that hold things together but I'm not sure they would look ok even if you could get the Ali off Here's a photo that might help show the construction

I just found a pic on the internet and cant see a way it is fixed on - probably glued so wrapping is a great idea !

Yes you can get all black ones - I have a pair originally purchased with a F750GS last that I now use on my 1250GS and the mountings are identical. I have had to add a thin plate tot he inside of the lower mount as there was a slight movement on the pegs they fit into but otherwise no work required.
