Hi Guys

I've read all I can on the subject, and gone through the search function to find old posts on this, but although it comes up a few times, no one actually answers this question, they mostly post links on recoding, which are very helpful, but not what I'm looking for. The box I believe is a Vario type from either the AC or LC 1200GS and I have the fitting bracket.

So I know you can remove a lock from an open top box which you don't have the key for as I've seen people posting they have it sorted, but I can't see an explanation of how they managed to remove the lock with no key?

I bought a top box second hand and the box is open. It has a lock in place which I have no key for, and can't get one, I don't have access to the VIN number of the bike it came off either. So I want to remove the lock and replace it with another lock or re code my new bike key to it. I just need to know how to remove it without drilling it out, which I will do if I need to.

Pictures of the lock are below as I've removed it from the top box thinking it would then just come out - but no.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

James

Hi James, using a thin flat screwdriver or tip of a blunt knife, push the shiny piece of metal in the first picture in towards the centre of the barrel and the barrel should push out towards the side that you put the key in.

Hope you can decipher that,.lol

I'll try this tomorrow and let you know how I got on as I could not find this simple advice in page after page of searches, people just kept posting recoding links.

Thanks

Before you remove the lock barrel insert your key into the lock itself. Then carry out the process in post #2

If you remove the barrel without there being a key in the lock and the lock is codeable, all the springs & wafers will fall out :blast

When you then remove the key put your index finger & thumb over the wafers so as to prevent the falling out

With the key removed from the barrel gently pull on one of the wafers to see if it can be removed

If you can remove a wafer then the lock is codeable and can be reused. If not, then the lock is redundant and you need a new codeable lock barrel & wafers :thumb2

He doesn't have the key.

I had the same thing recently. This tutorial walked me through the process. Was super quick and easy. The tumblers can be acquired easily enough - if you need some let me know and I can post the spares I have to you.

Thanks to everyone for the replies - Job done in about 2 minuets flat :aidan

I didn't have the key, so I was just careful when inserting the small screwdriver to hold down the first metal securing plate and then pushed it out gently into my hand, not dropping any of the tumblers.

So categorically - as long as the lock is not in the locked position - which it will not be if you can open and close the panniers/top box - then you can remove the lock with no key and little effort as described here - then re code it when you get a new key/bike and the new tumblers required and described in other threads.

The lock turns out to be recode-able, so as I get the bike next week I'll take RevvingRev up on his offer of the spare tumblers so I can do it when I get the bike - and then I can pass them on to someone else in the future or return what I have back to Revvingrev - either way I'll be sorted with little cost and to the thanks of this forum which I only joined recently.

Thanks very much for the help guys, I'm sure I will meet some of you at a later date, or sooner if your at "Thunder in the Glen" this weekend!

He doesn't have the key.

His own BMW key will slide into the barrel and stop the wafers etc dropping out. Easier to push on the key when trying to get that water pushed in.

It looks like there is a slight gap on the left side of that wafer-- as already mentioned, push a thin blade in there and push towards the centre while pushing gently on the key.

I knew this, but when he said

I thought he had the key from his new bike which as Steve has already confirmed will still slide in to the barrel and keep all the springs/wafers in place ;)
