Hi, Could anybody recommend a biker friendly good hotel at Verdun and is it worth joining a guided lecture tour? Hope to be there early June for two days.
Thanks in advance Den

Stayed there with Wapping of this parish plus Mrs ChasMill and Rory during our Olympics Avoidance Tour of 2012.

Excellent choice of hotel with a superb restaurant. Wapping and I also managed to infuriate Rory (then 13) during a tense round of Crazy Golf. Highly recommended.

Is it worth joining a guided tour?

Maybe yes, maybe no.

Verdun is a French army battle site, so many of the bigger tours are in French. Great if you speak it, not so great if not.

My suggestion would be to start by going to see the film shown at the Ossary, which runs near enough every half an hour. They show versions in French, English and German, so depending on when you arrive, you may have a wait but it's probably worth it. It will give you a good idea of what the battle was all about and how the place still has a special place in the French psyche to this day. You can do enough simple research on the internet to create your own tour without too much difficulty.

The most common mistake bods make is to assume that battles take place in quite a small area; they don't, at least not in the 20th century. Watch the film to get a scale of the affair, arm yourself with a half decent map, a simple guide book (they are cheap) or make your own tour. You'll have fun and could well end up seeing quite a lot.

Le Village is quirky and I like it, having been going for years. If it has a fault, it's that it sits on its own, with no village to speak of around it.

Have a look at the Cheval Rouge I mentioned. It's close enough to Verdun in a small town, good enough for a two to three night stay. On Wanders I usually try to find places with at least the basics reasonably close to hand, chemist, small supermarket, a bar, fuel etc. The town has the lot.

Hotel colombes not the greatest but very central 2 mins off the river and a really good underground big garage for the bike its on booking. Com as quoted earlier go to the ossary and again most tours are not in English
