Very Slow Macbook Air

Sue’s MacBook Air is running very slow. I assume it needs cleaning or defragmenting.
I have no experience with MacBooks, only PCs.
Anyone out there who knows what to do?

open activity monitor and see what background processes are using a lot of cpu & memory. Potentially there's a program running on the background that's lagging the performance.
