The top is sealed and says ''do not open''.

It's a completely normal maintenance free bike battery, so it'll be fine on a bike charger, but don't put it on a car charger as that might overdo it a bit. Most bike batteries are sealed for life these days - some batteries hold the acid in glass fibre matting and there are others which use gel for an electrolyte - these are all rechargeable, but there's little point in trying to open them to top them up.

However, if it is deeply discharged, don't be surprised if the charge doesn't take too well. Batteries are best stored fully charged, which is why Optimates and similar float chargers are so useful as the battery is kept in the optimum state.

However, if the bike won't start, it's obviously a junker and I'd be happy to come round and take it off their hands :D

That's great. Thanks for the info.:thumb
Much appreciated.

Actually, it is a ratty old thing!

its a sealed for life, trickle charge it only,an auto charger that puts more amps in wen battery is flat can damage it,check with a shop,u can get special chargers, and you can jump lead it to any other type of battery

Pretty much every motorbike battery you will buy is sealed for life, so any decent, modern, bike charger will do the job.

If you use jump leads, only do it for as short a time as possible from another battery as the more discharged the battery, the higher the current and the greater the chances of problems. When jump starting, what you're trying to do is supply enough power to get the other bike started, and to then charge the dead bike's battery from the alternator, not to fill up the dead bike's battery from the other one.

For information......

The VFRs (and all other Honda 400s) are notorious for having the reg/rec going faulty and taking out batteries. If the bike's been sitting a while and just won't start, and the battery charges OK, then fine. If it's a very recent problem and the battery can't be charged, jump start the bike and check if the battery voltage is about 14.5 with the revs over 2500. If it's much either way of this (usually a fair bit higher), then replace the reg/rec as well as the battery.

still cant use a fully automatic charger that higher charges a battery wen flat, check with a dealer,(i sell batterys)u MAY get away with but u may end up with a burnt out battery

I used my Optimate on my Honda CB-1 400 battery, probably the same size / type, didn't cause any problems.
