I need to convert a few old VHS tapes to DVD.

Seems like I need to connect the VCR to my PC via some sort of analogue/digital converter, then use some software to create video files and ultimately burn them to a disc.

Lots of kits out there with all the leads/converters and software. I don’t need anything fancy.....Simplicity rules......A simple VHS to DVD conversion.

Re the kits. Does anyone have any recommendations or horror stories?

Many thanks.......:)

are the tapes commercial ie macrovision proteteced if so you would need to build a lead to filter it out

a quote from a video site
"The Macrovision Anti-Copy Process (ACP) is the most effective and widely used technology for preventing unauthorised copying. At a Macrovision licensed duplication facilty, the Macrovision process is added to the video signal as video cassettes are duplicated. The process is completely transparent on the original tape, yet it degrades unauthorised copies made on the majority of all consumer VCR and TV combinations. When a consumer attempts to make a copy, Macrovision's technology confuses the automatic gain control of the recording VCR, weakening the video signal and causing copies to exhibit some or all of the following characteristics: dim and/or noisy pictures, loss of colour, loss of video and picture tearing. "

if they are home made movies no protection so a easy copy

if you using a usb to analog device to you pc it'll suck it in just fine bear in mind to render out as a dvd will take 5-9 times the length of the piece....

and your PC will crash...

it might be easier to buy a dvd recorder samsung do one for around £60 it's a tape to disc transfer and just takes real time.

make sure you finalise the disc and it's a dvd....:thumb2

or ingest it all into a media drive and make it available via home/ network streaming solutions bit more money but loads better....

I was using "EasyCap" for Windows 7. But it stopped working and can't get any help from the distributors. On the plus side - it was cheap. I'd be VERY interested in finding out what you get to work for you.

I used to use pinnacle kit but to be honest it was always buggy. Lately I just use a TV tuner card. They usually have an Svideo socket on them which will connect to a VCR either directly or via a SCART adapter. They all come with recording software that will record and put to a few video formats and even convert to DVD format. The one I have just now is a Compro E900 and it doubles up as a tuner for the home theater PC.

Convert your analogue VHS, S-VHS and Hi8 video to digital video.

I just sold this device on eBay for more than I paid for it. Canopus ADVC110.

I bought it to convert all my old video into digital video. I now have usable digital video I can edit, cut and paste into professional looking movies. I can add menus, clips and soundtracks like you see on purchased DVD’s.

Easy to use, connect the cables to your old video player and PC and it just works. No expert knowledge needed. Convert your videos and then put it back on eBay.

I really appreciate the advice so far....Gives me a bit to go on...:thumb2

Thank you...:)

Hi - I just need to straight copy Video tapes onto Hard Drives. This looks very interesting, but when I went onto a Forum (via Google) it all got a bit confusing. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4024354?start=0&tstart=0

Can you advise if this is suitable for "idiots" (me :D ) to use for straight copying, without editing..??

Cheers
