I am slowly getting to grips with my Street Pilot 3, and now understand the difference between a "waypoint" and a "via point" (waypoints are optional, via points are compulsory). My question is can anyone explain how I can set a "via point" when plotting a route on the computer ?

When plotting a route on the GPS unit, it asks whether you you want to mark a Waypoint or Viapoint but I can't seem to do this on the computer. Do I just mark the route using Waypoints ?

That's what I do.

Alternatively, instead of using a route of A to C via B, you could set up two routes: A to B and B to C.

If you're composing a route on your PC from A through B & C to D, you would create waypoints on A,B,C & D. You then compile the route in the route window. Then B & C are automatically "via points".
When you ask the SP3 to route you from A to D it will calculate the most direct route (fastest or shortest) unless you tell it to go via a "via point" which you would chose there and then on the map shown or out of the "find" menu.

To insert a Via Point on the PC, you create the route as normal ie: start & end points. Mapsource will then calculate the route & shows it on the map in pink. If you then change from the Route Tool to the Selection Tool (Arrow type cursor) & hover the cursor over the route, click once & the route turns yellow, click again & the route tool turns on again, but is specifically for you to enter a via point (please note: don't double click - they need to be separate). Drag the route over to the place you wish to travel via & click. Et viola, the route is then recalculated.

careful if you waypoint motorways as a route reversal will do a loop around the wrong carridgeway to get to the waypoint!
