Hi all,

I just received a email message from (supposedly)Yahoo on my hotmail account, advising me that someone was using my hotmail email address to set up a Yahoo account. The Yahoo page, and address looked genuine. There was a section at the bottom which prompted me to click a link if it wasn't me who had set up this Yahoo account. I did so, and was directed to a screen asking me to hit a button, either agreeing to open the account or to stop it being open. I did the latter, and received a message that the yahoo account had been blocked. I was not asked to enter any personal info or to do anything other than click the link.

It was only when I looked again that I noticed a little logo saying that "the sender of the message could not be verified by sender id". Doh! It was at this point that I started to grow donkey ears!!!

I have AVG antivirus and zone alarm firewall installed and fully updated on my pc. I'm concerned though that by clicking a link to what now seems to be a spoof email I may have corrupted my online security.

Any of you pc experts out there have any advice as to what, if anything I can or should do now for damage limitation?

Cheers, Tony

It may actually be genuine, but even if not and assuming you didn't actually give any personal details, it could be simply a 'fishing expedition' to find a genuine email address to send spam mesages to.
If so, you'll not be surprised to find your inbox full of it shortly !

It's difficult to say what you may have done, as you didn't give any personal info you should be ok from that aspect, however you may have unwittingly allowed a trojan/keylogger onto your system or some other type of spyware.
Run the usual checks, Spybot, Adaware and download xray-pc and run that, and then don't ever open an email of that nature again :nono

Edit
Rgarding centaurs comment he could be right, so if you haven't already done so download IE 7 install and put the phishing filter on. There are others on the site who can advise you re Firefox if you use it and they will most probably do so. :thumb

Thanks guys...I've done the usual scans and they come up all clear...I confess, I was unaware of the phishing filter on IE7 though; I appreciate the tip! Tony
