Vietnam Xmas 2024

Dinner with the locals was interesting. Quite an assortment of pig parts in different guises.
Barely a word of English from any of them but they were all so welcoming and wouldn't take anything in payment.
Splendid evening.
They did seem to enjoy their what I assume is some kind of rice wine or something a little like saké.
I had one small shot which is the first alcoholic drink I've had in over 5 years. IMG20241211182130.jpgIMG20241211182134.jpgIMG20241211185734.jpgIMG20241211190916.jpg

The moch chau island resort is still being built but is quite impressive .
The bridge is awesome but a little disconcerting if you look down whilst crossing it. There were 2 guys underneath it cleaning the underneath of the glass panels. I'm sure they may be paid well😳🫣
At the end of the bridge is a huge cave which goes into the mountain by about 400 metres. Pretty amazing.
After this I did the zip line down to the valley floor and resort.
Next was a bit of go-carting. I lapped a couple of Vietnamese twice I think. 😁
Then there was an air slide. Rude not too even though I felt like I was 40 years too old for it. 🤭by midday the sun had come out and the clouds were lifting a bit so the views are now much better. I had thought about staying here yesterday but it would seem rooms appear to be unavailable. It is very quiet at this time of year. 🤔
I'm sure in the summer it is very busy. Glad I came now 🤭
Lunch time now. The food may be better than last night's meal. 😜
The massive restaurant here is built totally from bamboo. Very impressive. Most of the photos I took were before the sun came out. Shame though I'll probably take a few more. 😁

I'd be struggling with the glass bridge and walkway.

I went to a coal mine museum and they'd capped the original shaft with perspex so you could see the depth and the stonework. I stood peering into the top (whilst holding the railing behind me) and as I was think 'nope - that's a long way down' some kid walked out into the middle and jumped up and down. I had to look away

Quite a days ride today. 220kms and it took 6 hours of riding😳
It started off a little cloudy as I left the homestay. That'll be ok I thought.
10 Kms later as the road went higher I hit the cloud line and fog and light rain. I pushed on thinking it'll clear soon.
It got worse so as I was getting wet now I stopped to waterproof up . It got to a point I could barely travel over 25 kph the visibility was so bad, as the locals all seem to use the force in weather like this I took it easy and kept to the right as they were still doing crazy overtaking manoeuvres even though you couldn't see.
I pushed on and as I started to descend and got below the clouds it became much better but the roads became decidedly worse as I carried on. This is what I came here for....
Tiny roads going through the jungle. The views were superb now that I could see them🫣
I took a few photos along the way. Halfway ISH along todays route was a river ferry. It was a floating barge with a small tugboat cables to the side of it 😳
Anyway we boarded and said boat did it's manouvers to get us away from the dock then it turned itself around whilst attached so it could then steer us to the other side. Crazy. Health and safety is not applicable in Vietnam. I stopped at a large memorial after a bit to get the waterproofs off.
Roads were almost dry. Carried on over many passes and more beautiful scenery. It's astounding how much of the forest/jungle has been cut down for farming but I guess that's what happens. In a couple of the mountain photos the huge brown bits are corn fields that have given up their yield. There are many terraced rice fields and tea plantations too. And in a couple of valleys the covered fields are potatoes I think. Amazing views again.
Up untill this point I think I may have selected 6th gear about 3 times 🤔
The last 50 Kms or so we're on more main roads so the mental driving started again.
I have found a little homestay that is a bit basic but it'll do me. 100.000 dong for the room. 120.000 dong for some dinner tonight. All in that's about £7.50. 😳Bloody rip off.
I am now in the start of some of the iconic limestone mountains that the area is famous for. Breathtaking.
That'll do for today.
Unless I remember anything else. Pics to follow

My mate has just come back and has been to some of the same spots. He did enjoy some down time in Sapa and Son La if you go near there.

Today's ride, I think it was around 220 Kms again. Another 6 hours in the saddle. Started off on Asia highway 13 again. Lots of traffic, trucks busses and millions of bikes. Busy.
It was Nice riding once away from the towns. There were a couple of passes I was looking forward to but as I ascended I rode into thick clouds again.
Down to 25 kmh again and zero visibility . 😵
At the top the view was non existent. 😕
A little after that I turned right off highway 13 and got onto quieter roads with a real assortment of surfaces all the way along. Good tarmac, bad tarmac. Single lane or double lane. Stretches of gravel and some bits were just not a road at all. 😁
Stopped at a large possibly Buddhist monument. I say large, it was massive. 😳
Made a chicken noodle soup with hot water from my flask and ate 2 cakes I'd bought earlier. 70p for the cakes.
Lots of large lakes up here with massive dams. Producing power I'm sure. There were also an awful lot of land slides in the areas where the dammed off lakes were, I did wonder if the flooding of the valleys could add to this. I carried on on some super twisty roads barely got out of 4th gear for hours, probably riding at 40-45 Kms an hour at the most. It was great though a lot of it through dense jungle/forest again with wonderful views.
There were so many children out and about in the villages. They love it when you wave at them. Their childhoods are not being spoilt yet like I think they are in so called civilised countries. Many if them riding scooters to school without helmets etc. it's nice to see.
The same can be said for the mums or dads with 3 kids on the back. Or walking down a road in the middle of nowhere to get to school. Round my way at home they are taken to school in a 4x4 from their house a quarter of a mile a way just to be safe. 😳
Anyway I digress....

I aimed for a homestay which was higher up a hill and in the middle of loads of terraced rice fields and the only way there was up a very narrow path for about 5 Kms. Scary, as it was very steep too. I got there and the place looked like a wreck. Thanks Google maps.
I rode all the way down and found a lovely room on the edge of town instead. A bit expensive this one at about £18.00 but it is Saturday night 👍🏻
The lovely young lady says she will sort me some dinner which saves going out again.
Anyway cloudy all day again but no rain. The pics would look a lot better if it was brighter and you'd see the mountains better. But I took some that I'll post in a bit.

What a day 😱
It all started off nice with a hint of sunshine in the valley at 8am. I had a great night's sleep too. The best bed I've had so far. They do have a tendency to have rock hard beds over here. Dunno why?
240kms or so done today. 7 hours of riding.
Heading north it started off on a lovely road through the valley with many terraced rice fields and tea plantations. Also quite a few dams as well and some areas of dense jungle too. As I got further north the roads deteriorated tremendously. Road works after roadworks.really rough in places but at least it was bright though cloudy.
As I headed higher and higher up the pass I could see the top of the mountains was in the clouds so I expected to have no view at all again. I had no choice but to carry on though at this point as there wasn't an alternative route available.
As I thought when I got to the place I was heading for it was indeed so cloudy it wasn't worth spending the 500.000 dong to visit the glass platform up the mountain 😕
So I carried on with the route. On the way down visibility was about 20 feet and I could barely see in front of the bike. Just what you need on a mountain pass.
I pushed on at less than 25kms an hour. The road was also very muddy and slippery all the way down. Mixed in with more and more sections of roadworks it was very scary. It was so cold at the top too so at least it was warming a little as I descended though it took hours to do 60 Kms.
Finally I was below the clouds and I could see again.
I was quite close to china border up here too.
I decided to carry on some more and the roads improved somewhat. Very slow but very twisty. The odd bit of roadworks but nothing like before. Found a hotel for tonight as there doesn't seem to be many home stays in this area. Will walk up the road later in the hope of finding some dinner. Boots and bike are absolutely filthy again. Heading north east tomorrow. Let's hope it improves though I think I've done the higher mountains for now.
