VIN Number

In prep for my forthcoming travels it has dawned on me that I haven't yet applied to replace either my lost passport or V5 for the GS.

As I type I am in the middle of filling out a V62 in order to apply for my replacement V5 but have stopped at the VIN details requirement section. As my GS is inaccessible right now I am referring to other docs for the bike details.

This is where the confusion comes in and perhaps someone here can clarify?

The original delivery order states VIN prefix as WB followed by 8 further digits/letters, whereas on the doc for the first 600 mile service it states VIN No as just 4 digits, which has no resemblance to the delivery order VIN No whatsoever?

The bike was bought and serviced at the same place.

The bike details (model) are correct on both docs as are the Reg , Chassis and Engine No. So why the difference on the VIN details?

Naturally I'm inclined to select the WB number but still at a loss for the conflicting info.

Does it make any difference? The 600 mile service record is a BMW document that has no relevance outside BMW circles.

Oh and in the international VIN coding, 'W' denotes Germany (it used to be West Germany) and 'B' denotes BMW.

Surely the bike is somewhere to hand?

The vin number is on a plate across the back of the headstock and used to be on the frame just in front of the seat on a plate

Usually the Vin used for bike parts / model identification starts with a Z another letter and five digits totalling 7 characters e.g. ZX12345

It would make a difference to DVLA if the wrong number was put in. I had no idea the service record is just an internal document, especially when it states a number I am not familiar with as being the VIN.

You will sometimes find country/model codes as well, usually on service sheets, ie

R1200GS 2004 > 0307 or 0317
R1200GS 2008 > 0303 or 0313
R1200GS 2010 > 0450 or 0460

GSA 0382, 0380 and 0470.
