Cant bloody believe it - got infected with a virus :spitfire probably my own fault, even got norton internet security suite :( now i am usually very careful, i thought i was well protected with norton installed, obviously not

Anyway i seem to of picked three for the price of one, "backdoor.trojan" "dialer.dialplatform" and adware something or other which keeps changing my home page, anyway did the usual thing of running norton anti virus, it initailly found 12, yes twelve  infected files, went to quaratine them and delete them, seemed to go well, too well, last two would not delete, had to restart - did that ran virus scan again, bugger found 10 infected files this time :spitfire

Went through the same process, still could'nt delete them etc - went onto norton website found the details of the three main virus's which seemed to be causing the problems, printed off the instructions on how to get rid of them, seemd quite simply, until i got to the part where i had to edit the registry on the computer, on that point i gave up, as i had to look for any values tht had changed, bit hard when you don't know what the value was int he first place

I know i thought i have 3 yrs worth of support from norton, i'll give them a ring, wanted 27 of my hard earned cash to remove the virus over the phone, :dabone , next i try Dell as above got 3 yrs support from them, give them a ring, wont deal with me, cos i am not the named person on the contract have to speak to SWMBO :spitfire , anyway Dell want 57 squids for sending out an engineer to sort it out - sod that :dabone

Gave my mate Dave a bell, not a problem, he is going to sort it out (i hope), collect the computer from him tonight, the cost - one bottle of Wine :clap :bow - and a bit more respect (rides a triumph speed triple), and don't worry - at this time twenty (ish) past three in the morning i am sat in work posting this, perhaps i should of posted this in the forum rant section

on the up side i'm on double bubble - working on a bank holiday

Free anti virus & spyware: AVG, Spybot search & destroy, Spyware blaster and windows anti spyware. Spybot prevents any unwanted system changes by popping up and asking if a particular change is OK :thumb
Don't recommend relying on Norton!

I run AVG (free version http://www.grisoft.com) and Spybot (http://www.spybot.info/) too.. both seem good products and not had any problems with them on Windowx XP Pro.

Used to run Norton Systemworks 2005 on Win XP... what a pain in the arse it was! Made my pc run slowly and take an age to boot up, and it seemed to affect certain legit programs when starting up, whatever I did to get them recognised. In the end I uninstalled it completely and put AVG on and reactivated the Windows firewall. PC now runs much faster and boots up in seconds.
Norton used to be top dog but I think their recent products have gone to the dogs..

For cleaning spyware infections I can only recommend using Microsoft Windows Defender Beta 2. Available from http://www.microsoft.com
I used to use Spybot Search & Destroy myself but then one day I used it on a m8s PC and it tried to 'clean' so many files that it caused his PC not to boot back up again.
Microsoft Windows Defender also includes the ability to ask you if you want to allow a system change to occur should one try to occur :)

Thanks for the replies - got it back now - have just downloaded Spybot have used this before, going to have a look at the AVG thing - can i run two anti virus programmes at the same time on the same machine ?

Hi

can i run two anti virus programmes at the same time on the same machine.

No

But

AVG is a anti virus program & Spybot is not, the 2 will run OK on your PC.
Them + XP's firewall & for good measure Aw-aware & you will be OK :thumb

Had them on my PC for 3 years

Was using this combo on my PC till I say the light and went Mac and all problems disappeared.

Running those two was far far better than Norton, which seems to be basically useless and expensive. However, still got a load of viruses through (though nothing really bad), so they certainly don't cover everything - still have to check sweep and target regualrly.
