Getting a BM moto-meter voltmeter without the wiring. I think the easiest / most sensible option is to piggy back the speedo light. I think it should have 90 degree connectors, so that it keeps clear of the headlight shell. If you look on the R65 is vandalised thread second from top photo, look how close the live lead is to the shell  Link here:http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166532

Searched on google and ebay and the best I can come up with is in the photo below and is in the red circle. Any ideas on where to get them from / what they're called?

If anyone has a couple of spares :augie

If you need the transparent rubber sheath that fits over those 90° connectors send me a pm :thumb

You'll have about a 0.5-1.5 volt drop measured at the at the speedo light, compared a the battery post connection...

Not considered that, but having a switched, even if it's the key that's doing it, seems to be sensible.

If nothing else, having the power come from the light switch will give an indocation of what's happening, which unless I calibrate the voltmeter, it's about the best you can hope for :(

The brown lead is earth anyway isn't it? Plus the headlight shell is glass so it shouldn't be conductive apart from the metal mounting rim, so I don't really see a problem? :nenau

Not a perfect world but it will give you a good indication...:thumb2

Can't check at the moment, but the diagrams I can see on line agree with what you're saying. I guess if the live one is close, you could just turn the holder 180 degrees and then the earth would be nearer :blast

Any other ideas on an easily accessible switched source for the voltmeter? I like the speedo light as it's relatively easy to get at and work on, is fused and is at least controlled by the key.

Just strap the + wire onto a spare + tang on the fuse board, one that goes off when the ignition is switched off. That's what I done.
Safe riding Karl.
