Wait for the new w/cooled BMW or defect?

OK well you can either give Ken a call or I can ask him to call you if it's easier (not that I get comission or anything) if you want to talk numbers. Did Laguna offer any discount? - I nearly called in there this afternoon as I went to Tovil anyway.

If you go for the Triumph, sould your preference be for the launch edition (officially all sold out) or the standard bike?

I still don't understand why people are comparing the Explorer to the GS.:nenau As it is purely a road bike (as marketed by Triumph), don't you think it would make more sense to also look at the Multistrada and Honda offering?:rob

So then are you saying that you should only consider the GS if you have off road pretentions? I would like to know what % of GS owners do any more off roading than across a campsite or suchlike but I guess tht has all been talked about before. If you're serious about offroad then I would have thought that the KTM would be a better anyway

I do agree, I would not be venturing anywhere much other than the odd track to remote dwellings, no serious stuff and certainly not on the Explorer. The only reason for such comparisons are that all of the research shows that 95%+ never do anything other than use it on the road. They are trying to steal that market...... from BMW and the others.

I don't fancy the Ducati, just from experience, and they have yet to convince me that they have made up the difference in their reliability stakes etc. A guy at work has had his off the road so much he is totally hacked off. Also his and other Ducati owning friends have service costs that make BMW look OK! :D
Already ruled out the Honda, I realise that these things are personal.

But I am also not dismissing the fact that the ride back home on the GS was fast, fun, and as Wapping said in an earlier post, it is so easy to make good progress on. The Twin Cam engine is a good one, in fact the whole package is.

Possibly part of the problem is that unlike when I first started riding, there just aren't that many bad bikes, just good one and great ones, very few 'lemons' these days. :)

Aren't most GS' used predominantly on-road? I know it has a bit more capability but most owners do little more than ride the odd badly surfaced road, and for the most part you could still do that on a sportsbike (I certainly took to the odd unpaved road on my ZZR)

I think the physical size of the Triumph (and new Honda) put them in some sort of competition with regard to at least 95% of GS riders.

If they offer all round ability with regard to "any road" and are as good at hauling motorway miles as they are on A roads, B roads and bumpy back lanes, capable of carrying two people and their luggage then they are definately on my test-ride list.

As a competitor to the GS they may fall short in the off-road area, but I suspect these manufacturers are targeting the GS owners and not the bike itself (seems smarter, why complicate design and costs trying to provide some off-road capability most owners would happily lose if everything else was on-par or better) Plus all those losing faith in having to have the latest and greatest sports bike, there are a lot of dsillusioned bikers out there who may never have bought a BMW "Adventure" bike, but would be tempted of their GSXZXRRSP with a Jap or Brit offering.

The Super Tenere took on the GS head to head and for the most part lost, although I am tempted by one it is not for its off-road capability.

The MTS is really in a league all of its own, so fast and light, the definitive headbangers choice - but I can't see too many GS owners rushing to get one (Except maybe those who bought into the GS craze to be fashionable) and they certainly don't have either off-road capability or two-up mile munching credentials (Which the Triumph and Honda's will have)

I still doubt any of them will be a significantly better road bike than the current GS, probably faster and smoother, but unlikely better road handling or touring capability, and will almost certainly lack "Character" for those who care about such things, I don't, but have to admit the GS does have a nice quirky feel.

Looking forward to a summer of test rides

I tried to PM you, but can't you don't seem to take messages? :nenau

Was in looking at the Triumph the other day and the dealer was happy to arrange a test ride and let me have a really good look over it.

Looking at the bike it needs spoked wheels and a larger tank to threaten the GS/GSA but will no doubt be a stonking bike.

The design of the current small tank and shrouds look like they are designed to be converted in the near future to a larger tank ie like the Stelvio.

Equipment wise it is very well specced for the price but the luggage is not for my taste

Can you please either quote what I said or remove your post.

He did.

It's possible Taffy may have precised the gist of it from:

I think this forun is actually quite 'sticky' and a lot of us have hung around since selling our GSs. People often claim that we're only here for other reasons but it's actually one of the most active, informative and fun forums around. It's developed and is now about much more than GS's

I did make a contribution a while back (when I had a different username). I've never really understood whether this is a club or just a forum, how it's run, where the subscription goes and what the money is used for. Maybe that's a discussion we can have elsewhere.

Just a wild guess, mind.

Had 3 Triumphs and always found the build quality questionable......:nenau

I'll be waiting to see what the new 1250 brings personally....
