i have to ask. how can you produce something as clever as that with a pc, while not knowing how to do screenshots?

I have several theories :-
- I've been at over 2500m for the last year, now I'm 1500m lower the oxygen is making me high
- still pissed from Christmas
- still pissed from New Years Eve
- all of the above
I had planned to make a proper set of trial maps that could be loaded into a GPS, but it completely slipped my mind before starting the next version.
Screenshots are a weak substitute for getting real maps to try, am still kicking myself for that. I'll make sure that the next version has them.

A question for those who already have it....

Version 1.6 is coming along nicely & I've started on the windows installer, but before I get too far I have a question :-
Would it be OK if the installer 'phoned home' when its used ? Which means you could only install it on a computer while connected to the net.
I've come up with a way to do automatic updates but for this to work the download server needs to know which member (and computer) its talking to, otherwise the poor thing gets confused and sends the whole thing ! (ouch)
The downside is if you're trying to install while 'on the road' you'd have to find somewhere to connect.
Installing it on a cibercafe computer would'nt be a problem (burn the installer onto a CD), but if you're traveling with a laptop you wouldnt be able to do it while camping in the middle of nowhere.
I guess if you've just downloaded the worldmap its not an issue as you'd already have a net connection, so maybe I'm worrying about nothing.
Opinions welcome as always.

For a forthcoming Morocco trip I downloaded http://www.island-olaf.de/travel/marokko/gps.html and have to say the map appears rather more detailed than the Worldmap under discussion here - except perhaps for the number of towns/villages displayed
Is there any chance of some co-operation and integration here?
To make such a comparison I have obviously coughed up my £25 as I feel this is a worthy project

Why not check for a connection and then update, if no connection is available then it just completes the install of the base software. Not knowing your product (yet!) It is hard to comment, however you can always use a semaphor file of zero bytes and use the date as a reference for the level of downloads, just update the file date when the dl is complete.
BTW - HTTP port 80 stuff is always good as obscure ports for downloads can fall foul of weird ISP's rulse sets

Sure, I've been thinking along those lines for a while & plan to open up the project, I like 'Open Source' things as they evolve faster.
I'm happy for *anyone* to donate maps to the project...provided they're copyright free & donated with the authors permission. Things like that can be uploaded via the 'Got Maps?' link on the website.
When things get a bit less hectic I'll make tiles available so people can use them a basis for their own creations, obviously itd be nice if improved maps came back to the project. Its going to take me a while to get that set up, its on the list after finishing version 1.6 and the webupdater.

Do you need to have a Garmin worldmap too, or would you be able to use your maps without it? If your maps are like transparent topo maps, I could see the advantage of having a Garmin world (base) map, but if you don't have it, would you be able to make a kind of track based (click points on the map to navigate to) routing?

No, you dont need the Garmin Worldmap.
These maps do everything you've mentioned. They're not routable (neither is Garmins) but you can use MapSource to do what you've described.
If your GPS has a built in basemap for your region that'll give you basic routing while travelling there but outside that region you're down to using waypoints.

Progress report on verson 1.6
Just to let you know how things are going with the next version.
Rather than hunting for 'holes' in the worldmap and fixing them one-by-one I've started it from scratch, so its taken longer than I thought.
Should be time well spent as v1.6 will have full city indexing which 'should' enable the mapsource 'Find' function, wont know for sure until the eval version has compiled but its looking good.
Still on target for the end of January, provided nothing unexpected happens.

I've had reports of a 'download manager' screwing things up, so if you've got one of them running try turning it off.

Cheers, lads, took about 4 go's but got there. Turned the download manager off. This is a tremendous piece of software. Even Doolin's on it. Look forward to the updates.......

THought I'd add my two-pennies worth for anyone still not sure if the Wanderlust Map is as good as or better than Garmins.
The simple answer is YES!!!
Lisa (my wife) and I were staying with Bob in Peru, when he started compiling the maps and kicked off the project, ha, I've just remembered through the drunken haze that I came up with the name...Mmm, sorry I digress. Not many of you will actually appreciate how many man-hours and late night have gone into this, trust me it's a lot and Bob's not a pretty sight in the morning anyway
Lisa and I and our Garmin GPS 5 have been using the Wanderlust maps exlusively since we left Bobs and right now we're in Mexico. So far the map data has been spot on. Often when Garmins WorldMap showed no towns or roads, the 'Wanderlust' would give us all the detail we needed. When Bob bragged the Wanderlust Map would locate every populated place on earth, I thought he was joking...he wasn't. From the tiniest pueblos in Ecquador to the highways and byways of Venezuala and Guatemala. Bob thanks we'd have had a much harder time of it without you maps. Top job.

What is the Russia and Kazakhstan coverage like?
Also, I read a comment some way back in this thread about needing a connection to install to my Garmin. Please could you clarify on this. I'll be travelling with a laptop and will need to change the bits of the maps as I go as I don't expect it to all fit onto my Quest in one go. If I have everything on my laptop before I go, will I not be able to chop and change which bits are on the Quest without going online?
