Hi,
These maps look like they could be very useful.
What is the Russia and Kazakhstan coverage like?
Also, I read a comment some way back in this thread about needing a connection to install to my Garmin. Please could you clarify on this. I'll be travelling with a laptop and will need to change the bits of the maps as I go as I don't expect it to all fit onto my Quest in one go. If I have everything on my laptop before I go, will I not be able to chop and change which bits are on the Quest without going online?

In version 1.5 the coverage for Russia is 'adequate', the version I'm working on now is a *lot* better

When you install the maps on your laptop you need'll to be connected to the Internet as the installer 'phones home' to check your account - the installer doesnt download maps, it just installs them on a computer.

I'd recommend burning the installer on a CD and taking it with you just in case you need to re-install it.

You dont need to be connected to use the maps or transfer to your Garmin.

Not leaving until early May, so could get the newer release. Will burn a copy to my backup external hard disk drive.
With all of these places, I just need the main 'A' road equivalents and routes into big city centres.
What is coverage like in Kazakhstan, please?

Main routes etc are all on there so should wok for you

My lords, ladies & gents.... may I introduce the original 'crash test dummy' for the GPS maps ;-)

Yes, I'm still in Medellin, thinking of moving to Bogota in a couple of days time - too much work & not enough play.

Decided 'stuff it, going to play with the bike today', only that didnt quite go to plan. The poor thing has been parked up for the last month. Flat battery, flat rear tyre & to add insult to injury my bike jacket has gone mouldy.

I really must get out more. ;-)

Might catch you up in Central America.

Mapsource files would be good I've already added the waypoints from the file you gave me back in Arequipa.

Once this version is done I'll work on making the map data available - that way you can update the maps directly. (cunning plan or wot ;-) )

Question ..... as a non globe trotting UK and Europe only kind of a guy would your maps at £25 be a better option than upgrading to CN Europe V9 when it is released later this month. If so would much rather put cash in your pocket than Mapsources'. Do you update all the major UK and Europe roads or is it much more about putting detail in the parts of the world that Mapsource dont.

I think what you have done and are doing is superb, top man

I'm probably the wrong person to ask ;-)

The worldmap comes into its own when you travel outside whatever region your GPS covers, so for world wide wanderers its really good.

I've never had a copy of City Navigator (got my GPSV in Chile) so I cant really compare it - hopefully some of the other folks here can comment on that.

I'll have the new version done in a couple of weeks & you'll be able to download a demo version to try it out, will post here when thats ready.

You still need the CN Europe V9 as it has detailed data and provides autorouting.

Wonderlust has very good Worldwide info - better than the Garmin World map but it does not provide autorouting.

My understanding was that the routing came courtesy of Garmin, the maps are a Mapsource product which the next update for is V9. The Wonderlust map is instead of Mapsource. So my question was really whether Garmin could just use the Wonderlust product in place of the Mapsource product.

If you plot a plot a route in Mapsource using, say City Select V8 from London to Brno using the route facility and waypoints if you want, you can save it, then change the view to the Wonderlust map or indeed the Garmin Worldmap and you will see the route on those maps.
Upload whichever map with route to your unit.
Only the City Select version will give you turn by directions.

No big deal. But if you extend your trip to Moscow, you will see benefits of Wonderlust over the Garmin WM offering.

There are many mapping products eg Garmin Worldmap, City Select and City Navigator.
They all have mapping information, to street level in City Select and City Navigator.
Both City Select and City Navigator have autoroute guidance included in their respective packages - City Navigator has more definitve guidance than City Select that is why it costs more. Some GPS receivers do not support autorouting.

You cannot autoroute with either the Garmin Worldmap or Wonderlust mapping. You may have noticed that when you are selecting maps on Mapsource there is a box at the bottom which has a "tick" to include route calculation data. (Recommended if your GPS supports autorouting)

Mapsource is just the "viewer" for Garmin and other products such as Wonderlust mapping.

New version (1.60) available for download

I've just made version 1.60 available for download.

There's still some major work in progress but I promised an update by the end of the month and this is already a big improvement - I also need to get up to Cartagena and out of Colombia before my visa expires !

Version 1.60 includes :-
- more data for Russia (thanks to Redboots)
- the first batch of useful POI's added (thanks Whatton!)
- *much* better performance with Garmin Mapsource
- improved installer thats compatible with the 'webupdater' (coming soon)

To get the maps, login to http://www.smellybiker.com/maps and select it from the list.

To install, first remove any previous versions as they're incompatible with this and any future releases, then run the installer as before. You'll be prompted for your email address & password during installation but other than that its all familiar.


As for the 'work in progress', this is what I'll be doing next :-

- Placenames need to be allocated to the correct map level. At present the maps look cluttered in some zoom levels. (2072 maps affected, 382 already rebuilt).

- Road classes are inconsistent thanks to the mixture of data sources, needs looking at on a country-by-country basis & hopefully wont take too long.

Pfew I've loaded 1.6 onto my 276C
I made a waypoint at random in South America at S28 31.578 W60 40.092

used the FIND option on the GPS and streams of POI's appeared for each of the categories below except 'Exits'
the GO TO functioned perfectly when selected to 'Off Road'

Exits none found
Lodging works OK)
Auto Services works OK
Shopping One for the Ladeeezzzz 'cos that works too !!!!
Attractions works OK
Fuel works OK
Food and Drink works OK
Cities works OK
Bank ATMs works OK
Recreation works OK
Community works OK
Entertainment works OK ( no whore houses more's the pity!!)

Hospitals works OK let's hope none of us need those! good 2 know where they are though!

Sorry to be a numpty but....

Ok, so i figure you're gonna get fed up with stupid questions like this but...

I still don't figure where this product sits?

As I understand it, I have mapsource on my pc, with the mapping from City Navigator on it. I copy the CN maps that i require onto my GPSR (with the autorouting info ticked at the bottom)

If i want to plan a route in advance, i plan it using mapsource, then send the route to my GPSR and bobs your uncle, i turn on the gps and follow the route. If i make a mistake, or choose to alter my route, the unit will autoroute back to the original route/destination....

or if while i'm out i want to plan a new route, i can use the gpsr to pick a waypoint etc and have the gpsr calculate a new route to that point...

So... where in this picture does Wanderlust Worldmap sit and what functionality does it provide?
