You cannot (as yet) 'route' with Wanderlust
How it sits? just like any other map in a folder of its own in C:\garmin\....
You select the Wanderlust maps from within MapSource (top left pick box) (instead of City Navigator)
You select the maps you want or all of them just like with City Navigator
You upload them to your GPS just like with City Navigator

What does it give you?
A huge amount of POI's (Points of Interest) which are actually inside the mapping thereby not taking up your waypoint memory space in your GPS (Bob has future plans to allow licenced users to modify/add/de;ete those)
References to roads which in Garmin's Worldmap are...well non-existent
Scrolling Maps on your Garmin unit when there weren't any before, updateable from cyber cafes worldwide
Read back and look at screen shots...says it all
Wherever you are, you will have more map info than worlmap was ever able to and search for nearest POI's and use the function to 'Go To'
Of course, you must select 'off road' option

(there is still a wee glitch as to the search function from within mapsource- Bob knows)

Currently 1.6 is 'cut in two Wander West and Wander East
Bob's next version, I believe will join these two halves together

Ok, so basically, correct me if i'm wrong....

It gives you the equivalent of a giant paper map, installed on your GPSR, which plots where you are on said map at any given time?

Obviously as well as the physical mapping, it also shows you the POI's etc.

I'm therefore assuming that if you wish to use the "go to" function, it will give you an "as the crow flies" direct line to it?

I guess it's a little like a giant "world" version of autoroute, only without the routing and with POI's ?

Is that about right?

In a nutshell
Wanderlust gives you MAPS and POI's

Your GPS will always (provided it acquires satellites) tell you where it is.
From there you can see if there are any roads to your destination.
Distance to and POI's all of which you can 'point to and Go To and yes, it has to be as the crow flies which is the option 'Off road' in your GPS because you CANNOT 'route' as you would do from within City Navigator.
Remember that map detail has been sent in to Bob from contributors all over the world-
The more people contribute of their waypoinst, tracks etc the better the maps will be.

IMHO this is a good product and really fills a hole in the map market.
It is not expensive, & I think well worth the investment
Bob has worked hard on this and it is on-going
Once you've paid up (he can take Paypal), you get lifetime updates for free.

Demo version available

There's now a demo version on http://www.smellybiker.com/maps for download.

These are fully working maps to try on your GPS, obviously you dont get a lot to play with but there should be enough to give you an idea of coverage etc.

Just tried the demo and subsequently bought it! Even version 1.51 looks more detailed than I expected. 1.6 is still downloading.
Bob, could I suggest that on the download page you write a few words explaining how it can be fully uninstalled (I just went to add/remove programs which seems to have done the trick). I was a little hesitant to try the demo as I wasn't sure how cleanly it would come off of my PC.
Also, it does not say on the download page that I should uninstall old copies before putting in the new ones (although it does in this forum).

Good idea, I'll put some appropriate words on the download page - thanks for pointing that out.

The installer software only allows one version of the worldmap to be on a computer to make life easier for the webupdater (still being worked on), otherwise it'd try to update both versions & you'd end up with two copies of exactly the same thing....kinda pointless really & a waste of space.

Today is my *last* day in Medellin & will be on the road for the following week so it'll take me while to respond to questions etc. I'll check email/PMs/posts etc whenever I get the chance so keep the feedback coming.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but does this software mean I don't have to carry heavy roadbooks anymore just basic Nelles type country maps?

I see how papermaps are still convenient for this for the overview. But sometimes I can't even find the roadbooks, or don't really need them.

Still looking for northern South America roadbook if the anwer is "no".

Provided you have a GPS ;-)

I usually pick up a basic roadmap from petrol stations etc, nothing fancy, but handy as a backup in case the GPS breaks or gets nicked.

I use an ancient GPSV set to landscape mode & bolted to the bars. Its got a small screen & isnt that fast but its adequate & waterproof to IPX7 (can be submerged for 30 minutes). Downside is a pathetic 19Mb non-upgradable memory.

60CSX works well - upside a great piece of kit for real navigation and storage up to 2GB and the ability to save tracks to the chip rather than the device memory.
Downside is portrait view-
I prefer the 276C hands down due to screen display amongst a heck of a lot of other features- downside of that one is the garmin memory cards are very dear- largest avail. 512MB at 4 times the price of a micro SD of 2GB........

Wanderlust is a replacement for Garmin worldmap.

By plotting a route on Mapsource you are using CN capability- you cannot transfer that autoroute to Wonderlust. Why would you when CN has more detail and also autoroute capability?

There are many areas of the world that do not have City Navigator autoroute capability, some countries have almost no mapping whatsoever but with Wonderlust you will at least be able to determine where you are with far more detail than Garmin Worldmap in most areas of the world.

The difference between say the old Metroguide (which had fairly detailed mapping but no autoroute) and City Navigator is that each segment of road has to have a classification given to it in CN ie whether it is one way, main highway or say a back road only suitable for motorbikes. This is the information included when you tick the box for autorouting information.

mmmmmm I think you're just missing the point!

Wanderlust fills a HUGE gap- I do not believe it is designed to 'compete' with City Navigator V9 at all.
Forgetting for one minute that V9 actually exists....
Wanderlusts offers you mapping ON your GPS ON your bike/car/4xe4 etc where before all that existed was...worldmap.
Read previous posts on wanderlust including screen shot comparisons between Wanderlust and Worldmap......pretty much self explanatory....Wanderlust gives you mapping/POI's etc where worldmap give you....zilch

If you plan on riding outside the areas of coverage of V9, in my eyes, unless you want to buy Garmins for the like of Sth Africa/Oz maps, then you will do yourself a great favour by having Wanderlust with you.
AS Bob (SmellyBiker) says, buy cheap paper maps from petrol stations or other sources in case the gps fails.
The beauty of Wanderlust is that it grows depending on contributions that everyone can make from corrections/tracks/POIs etc etc
You'll be amazed on the detail availabel and will scratch your head looking at Worldmap and wondering ..... what that was product all about.....
Buy the product - it really is good value for what it offers and help support Bob who is working pretty hard on this.

If I would go outside the V9 area or to country's were coverage in V9 could be poor I will buy these maps. It's a bargain compared to any alternative. That's for shure.

Having uninstalled 1.5 I'm having problems installing 1.6. Everything goes well 'til the setup page when W/L tries to call home. OK, in goes my email address and password, the p/w then clears and 'nowt happens except the PC goes into sloooow mode and has eventually to be rebooted. Have now had six attempts at installing both from a save to disc and direct run. All I'm left with is a Windows .pf file and loads of frustration

Anyone else had this problem?

I discovered that every time you try to install, it changes your password...

Perhaps log into the website, get them to send you your password... then have another go with that one?
