Wanted: even a Damaged Steptoe guard...:bow (if such a thing exists!)

Yes, yes, I know these are as rare as rocking horse sh!t, or hens teeth...
Am also aware that Steptoe may make some of these later this year.....

Am looking for just one (left or right - they are handed...) to bring to sunny South Africa - Steptoe has ok'd me copying them for SA, since it's not practical to import them to here..... mucho Pounds!

Have chatted with a local foundry - they can help if we can give them a sample, even if it's damaged/broken...!

(but when did you ever hear of a broken Stanton head guard! :bow)
Cheers

Why would he make a damaged one?:D

Adrian

I reckon there is a great business opportunity here. Just think of the bragging rights of a smacked up Steptoe headguard

- there I was slidin' down the road at 120.....

Makes me think of all the kneesliders that were set to with an angle grinder :augie

Thats it!!, where's me angle grinder!

A word from the wise (after the event!)

A warning, a while ago in a battery post full of tails of woe, some clever dick said " my gel battery has been going strong for 7 years". Well, the optimate has decided to terminate and the battery is flat!!. me and my mouth!, guess who's saying nothing about clutches!!.
Dave ( battery looks the same shape though?) GS.

Hi Dave - am trying (hard!) to follow your post about Optimate and Battery in my post about needing a Stanton/Steptoe head guard - did you maybe mispost, or have I been on the sauce?!
Cheers:jager

You want to try talking to him face to face. :D

Do you need the requested item in your hand or can you work from a drawing?

No, I wish I had!, dunno how it ended up in your thread, I reckon out gear box guru mr Ditch had something to do with it!.
Dave GS (more likly me suffering shock at the thought of forking out for a new battery! glad it ain't an electric car!!).

I need the part for the Foundry, but drawings would sure be a help, too!
Here's hoping!
Cheers:thumb

I could knock up a drawing in a while but I presume the foundry want to make their own casting masters.

I'll see if I can get around to it soon.

thanks

Unless I've missed a post, the above reads that you're planning to copy the design? I hope you have discussed this and licensed it appropriately.

Looks like Steppers is happy with the situation.:nenau

BTW, I'm very happy with mine - tough as old boots.

.

Maybe not............ - Steppers recieved some advice from a UKGSer member (who's a patent lawyer, thanks :thumb) ; who basically said considering "steppers" paid a lot of money to have a mould made he's been advised to contact the patent office and license them as his I.P.

Then he can grant a (paid) license to anyone else who wishes to copy them. Of course they can still be copied, but they'd need to be more than a 30% difference than my guards.

:nenau

More paperwork.

And quite expensive, I think you will need to get the patent in each country you want it to apply to.

Aren't these the same or similar to the American Jimmyjib designed back in 2002?

"this part is designed and manufactured by one of our own Advriders, jimjib, and has been discussed at length in GSpot."

My understanding was....

My understanding was that Steptoe's guards were likely/possibly a copy of JimJib's product, and referrence to this is made (correctly or not) in many posts in the ADVRider forum.

What matters to me most is that I contacted Steptoe, chatted about importing the finished guards to South Africa; he explained that it was impracticall to send (insure) multiple pairs of guards,
whereupon I asked him if I could copy them, and he gave me the ok, so whilst that may now change, it's important to me that I called the man personally and got his go-ahead.

I also posted on our (much smaller) South African forum that I would seek Steptoe's approval should we plan to copy his guards, to alleviate any fears of a 'knock-off' being on-sold on this side of the pond.

Here's hoping for a resolution - the chaps this side (SA) cannot afford GBP 145 (approx), excl. shipping, so it then made sense to seek permission, then reproduce locally, still paying for our own patterns (molds), etc, but avoiding significant shipping costs, and our horrific exchange rate,

Cheers

I'm only going by advice received from a solicitor who specialises in patents, but thanks for your concern :thumb.
Plus he's looking into a couple of more things about the headguards, and i'll be helping him out on his servicing... ;)

I was happy to receive the free advice. And i did invest a large sum of money having the moulds and tooling made by a specialist.

So perhaps i should sell copies of the moulds and tooling and take a percentage of any future world sales :D
