Just in case you haven’t seen my wanted add in the GS bikes wanted part of this site…

Wanted ( please) a R100GS PD.
I’m after a R100GS Paris Dakar…..any year, but good condition, and low miles if possible.
I’m not worried about what year, or what colour scheme…. ( but prefer red & white on these bikes)

Usual updates like wedgetail ignition, big brake disc, suspension upgrades, etc etc, very welcome. I’m not after a factory exact model as I know that many parts can be improved from what originally came it of the factory.
Would prefer a UK model as don’t want kph speedo ( if it came as kph, I would fit an Acewell speedo)

Anyone knows of any bikes coming onto the market, or if you wish to sell yours, please let me know.

Many thanks

Bubb

Morning Bubb,

I understand that there are no official UK R100GS PD machines, all are imported and most have kph clocks. Something to do with plastic fuel tanks not being UK legal at that time. I have an R80GS PD (Swiss import) and installed an Acewell speedo which is great. It has an optional temperature sensor sand handlebar remote for switching display/function.

Not true. This was the case when the first model was released, red with white stripes, but latterly the ‘pebble dash’ colour schemes were officially imported.

I sit corrected.
So Bubb, apparently, it's only the earlier (striped) PD bikes that will never be UK machines - mine is Swiss and red with grey pebble-dashing and despite those challenges, I like it.

I sit corrected.
I wanted a GSPD but, as you say, they wernt imported due to the plastic tanks so I ordered all the parts from Germany to convert a standard model. Subsequently the law changed. Metal only tanks was as a result of the 1960’s cafe racer scene and fibreglass tanks cracking open in accidents. European safety standards ensured non metallic tanks were split proof.

The law about metal only petrol tanks changed in the UK in 1992 I believe.
I had a 1991 BMW r100gs but it wasn’t till a year later they allowed the PD to be sold in the UK…..wish I had part ex’d my bike for a PD……but did 50k plus miles on my r100gs….loved it.

My 1994 R1200GS came with a plastic tank, it started to blister so Clarke’s as it was in Rednal Birmingham changed it to a steel one at no cost to me in 1997.

Some input on the plastic tank... the chap who originally bought my '91 GS originally wanted the GSPD with the large plastic tank but couldn't get it here due to the legislation at the time.

Shortly after his trip in' 92 he converted it to the GSPD spec so probably one of the very early conversions in the UK.

Pics show the bike in '92 as' standard' & then when I paid him a surprise visit on its 25th anniversary

The best one in the UK - and the best colour :D (y)

Please forgive my self-indulgence ☺️

I bought it from Germany 20 years ago with 22,000 km on the clock. Bought a new mph clock as new parts were easy then.

I put a Silent Hektik 400W permanent magnet alternator on an their ignition system.

Overland and Classic - the wonderful Mikeyboy, powder coated the frame and renewed all the bearings to make it pristine.

I just love it.
