So we've trundled about for a bit and no major dramas, although the old gearbox isn't getting any queiter...

If she's a keeper I can see that suspenders and gearbox will need sorting, the former is inevitable after 75k miles, gearbox / clutch we'll have to see whats what.

Meanwhile one weird thing which I didn't expect - she's quite jumpy on and off the throttle at low revs, is that a fuelling issue and is there a mod? Is there a throttle position sensor? Inevitably she doesn't have the smoothness of well maintained carbs but few things do. Also, if she does stay and I manage source an alternative link pipe and end can, I've heard that there's an electronic box of tricks which helps both performance and smoothness. Can anyone shed light? Is this an aftermarket plug in?

Much appreciated....

Yes there's a throttle position sensor. If the motor and the fuel injection is adjusted properly it should be smooth.
Please don't take offence, but if you hadn't realised that there is a TPS then take it to an Independant place that is well used with those bikes and get it serviced.

What he said ^^^

There are various black boxes, 2p wire links and snake oil solutions that may help, but will probably just mask the underlying problem.....

Sounds like you need to do a a good service just beforehand.......new plugs, start from a decent base line then tune it up properly-Throttle body balance, a TPS setup and valve clearances set etc :thumb2

Have a read through the font of all wisdom section, get stuck in or post up in your regional section that you'll provide bacon butties and coffee for whoever can show you how to do it for the first time, and it will be like a new bike:thumb

Do it yourself mate. Theres plenty of info on here and other web sites to get all the tuning and servicing yourself. As with most things the first time you do it, it will take ages. With experience it will be real easy. This is the first machine I have done TPS, TBS,CCT and valves on and it not only went well. It runs a lot better for it. I now consider all this stuff routine maintenance. These bikes are a dream to do run of the mill stuff on. Do a search on the acronyms in the font of all wisdom.

My bike has 72K on it now. It certainly isn't very quiet in the gearbox department. But it runs well so I just let it go.

I had my rear suspension refurbished for £100 which made a big improvement. But I suspect an after market unit would really improve things.

Good luck and just enjoy the old girl.

thanks lads, never worry about offence, tell it like it is that way we all save time :beerjug:

there's a well respected indie boxer man not far away and I'm getting to grips myself. I have to be really honest though - I've always been painfully slow with maintenance and I don't regard myself as a natural with a spanner. Chain adjustment and oil changes over the years, no worries. That, I'm afraid, is about it. A long time ago I realised that idiots like myself actually saved money and time by taking the trouble to find someone respected to care for anything other than the most basic stuff. What you obviously don't do is rush to the nearest main dealer. However it's never too late and with the 11 I want to try and do that bit more myself.

Still can't see myself stripping down the suspenders so I'll definitely be looking for someone to give fore n aft a once over, any recommendations appreciated. Cheers chaps.

Glory.
I was like you before owning a GS. Just oil and filter. Since owning the GS I've done valves camchain tensioners had both throttle bodies off and send away to be refurbed. My last job was taking the bevel box off to replace the paralever bearings. I just take my time and make sure I've got the tools I need. They really are easy to work on and all the guides are on the web. Btw removing the shock is really easy just un bolting stuff and there is a guide to that.
Good luck.
