Warm, Waterproof, Winter trousers

After getting absolutely drenched the other day on a two hour trip, I want to buy some new all weather gear.

Can't afford to buy it all at once, and as my trousers seem to be the worst offender, I thought I would start there.

Presumably salopette style trousers are drier and warmer than the normal trousers I imagine, so that would probably be first choice.

I saw some nice ones on the Hein Gericke site and don't know really what else is out there.

Any recommendations?

I can recommend both Rukka and BMW Tourguard kit for it waterproof qualities, if not for its low cost of ownership.

Salopettes are indeed warmer if only because they cut a lot of the wind up around the back of the jacket to the kidneys......

Check them out properly for quick access though........nylon fastneners and big fly zip.......I once had a very very close call after a long ride wearing a pair of salopettes that i had to remove my jacket to drop.........another tenth of a second and....erm...I'll leave it there i think.

If you can stretch to it go for the Rukkas IMO.....less tarty than the bee-emm stuff and its machine washable.

Approximately how much are we talking for a pair of Rukka salopettes (might be interested in the BMW as well but I have to say, I find the whole 'BMW Bike and wardrobe' thing a bit off putting, however if they were the best out there it wouldn't stop me)

Ivew got some Dianese ones very warm and dry removable lining, have got good knee armour and are one of the few pairs of trousers I found with some hip protection, about £125 a year ago and 26000 miles still waterproof.

To be totally honest I haven't actually had a pair of the Rukka trews.......I looked them over and they were damn nice, but I ended up buying some decent leather armoured trousers but a Rukka jacket.....like your reaction, I balked at the price and decided the leather trews would give me as much protection even if they were heavier and less waterproof, and with the Jacket costing me 400 quid (it was reduced heheh) I had to make a compromise somewhere.......

I'd hold on until the Ally Pally show if I were you...it's only a few weeks away and there's always some nice reduced kit there.....the Rukka stuff , because it's plainer and more functional, doesn't tend to look at all dated but you should still be able to pick up some nice bargain stuff there that's a year out of date(whether it be Rukka or whatever actually)

PS they have those silly and mad mini-motorcrossers at Ally Pally this year...what a hoot!!!!!

I've got a pair of salopettes that I bought from Harley Davidson - they really are warm!! they are not covered in Harley logos and if you want them they're yours for £50.00 plus postage.

They are in very good condition and I'm selling them as I've boght all new Belstaff gear, so they're surplus to requirements

I have these Wulfsport Alpina trousers . I use them with another make of jacket.

Cordura & goretex construction. Non CE armour comes as standard.

They only cost £75 (UKP) from Lucas Motorcycles in Ross on Wye.

There is a list of overseas distributors on the website.

Very warm with the zip out liner fitted. Legs have good zips to make getting your boots on easy and they seal well over the top of your boots to keep the wind & water out.

I use them all year round as they are much cooler than leather in the hot summers we have had recently.

Oh, and they are waterproof of course.

I've also got a pair of Dainese Goretex trousers. They have a zip in thermal liner and unlike some other makes like hein gericke the waterproofing is not in the liner so they are waterproof with or without the liners. they are the most comfortable & warm trousers I've ever had. cost was about £175, getting on for 12 months old and they don't leak a drop yet!

I bought what I thought was a bargain Jacket/trouser combo from the bike show 3 years ago. Spec same as Belstaff gear also at show, but £50 cheaper..special offer sir. Think the waterproof membrane was made of same material used for teabags! Fortunately got a full refund, no questions.
Checked out what coppers and couriers wearing - Heine Gericke All Seasons. Bought jacket and trousers, appx £400 3 years ago. Ride every day, all weathers, appx 30,000 miles a year. Never leaked, never cold, good fit, nice touches with storm collar and draught flap around bottom of jacket. Trousers dont zip to jacket but jacket does have comedy crotch strap, prevents jacket riding up when really going for it in summer with zips open for cooling.
Thoroughly recommended. Get the best you can afford, this gear lasts the miles.

unlike some other makes like hein gericke the waterproofing is not in the liner

Just noticed this in earlier posting. My Gericke trousers and jacket both have removable thermal linings. Both have waterproofing in outer shell, NOT in liner, so stay dry in summer downpours as well. No doubt there are cheaper versions with waterproofing in liner....guess you get what you pay for.

I've got a pair of the Alpine Star Gore-Tex trousers with removable lining and all the armour etc. As with the Dainese ones the Gore-Tex lining is part of the trousers.

I ride to work every day and have never wanted for extra thermals and are quite good value for money.

if you have a few quid you simply cannot beat Rukka I wear it all year round and do about 20,000 miles a year have crashed 4 times in it and touch wood no real damage,totally windproof totally waterproof and great for surfing down roads at 40mph provided the fit is right........................if you are on a bit of a budget Heine Gerike All Season is a good compromise but do yourself a favour bite the bullet until May and go to the BMF Ralley at Peterborough they will have a slight seconds/catalogue returns tent and you will pay a fraction of the high street price....

BMW all fine and good but Rukka is nicer quality and lower cost (if you shop right). Buy them on the web from germany - www.louis.de. Iv ordered from them before twice with no problem. For example: Rukka RVP pro trousers (try the on at infinity first for size:

Another vote for Dianese Trooz here.

I'd also rate their jackets.
My first managed about 3 winters until I crashed in it (oops) but it held up very well indeed in the crash, so I bought another.

How about snowboarding trousers ??

Ok - they haven't got armour, but they're waterproof, fairly tough material and fleece lined.

and you can wear them when you get off - for a short interval i'd presume.

They're about £50 from outdoor shops

skiing trousers

I got some very cheap - but waterproof salopets (?sp) in a "last year's ski kit" sale which I wear over my leathers and some bright orange thick ski/snow board trousers if if is really cold. As it was a sale they only had XXL size which is great for over the leathers and they have the inner-boot outer-boot bit to keep the snow out which does a grand job with the rain. Grand total of £15.....

Dianese are the mutz nutz but pricey so I bought some BMW Voyager 2 trs, I've never had salopettes before and I'm impressed with the comfort and how much warmer they keep you.

Upside, 100% waterproof, tried and tested in torrential downpours, the like of which you probably don't see in the UK.

Downside, not as warm as you'de probably like for the UK, however I put on a pair of tracky bottoms underneath and spent a long morning in the mountains (around 6000ft and in snow) without any bits freezing up and dropping off
