Note: the GS is the 1st bike I've used with panniers, I don't like things sticking out wider than the rest of the bike because.. erm.. I'm like that.

For many years, attending motorsport events, in the main, has always been a compromise of sorts depending on the weather. If its super sunny (like recently) it meant jeans and possibly a t-shirt (though sun-cream is recommended these days) if its not too far, or if its a longe trip wearing all the gear and being hot, uncomfortable at the event (you know the kinda thing).

Enter the GS with a Givi topbox and BMW's two tons of Vario panniers (the BMW top box is too small). I carry in the unexpanded panniers, with stacks of space left over: a pair of trainers; piece of wood in case the ground is soft where parking; the lock thing for the under-seat u-lock; camera and lens; proper shirt; trousers; spare socks, baby wipes (50p from Tesco) to keep ya clean and cool; a hat; umbrella for sun and rain. In the offside pannier, a GS inner bag is used, so I have a carry bag for the camera etc when I arrive. The top box remains empty.

Ride normally, filter normally, the GS soaks up the weight just fine.

Arrive and get changed: the Master V's jacket and trousers go in the Givi 45L top box; the panniers are now expanded: boots go the nearside pannier; helmet in the offside pannier.

Lovely, all that gear is safely stowed away and best of all I don't have to walk around carrying or wearing any biking gear, instead I'm wearing cool, comfy civvies :-) Oh no rucksack needed, so no rivers of sweat down my back.

This is old news for a lot of people, but the GS has made the past couple of days a pleasure (Goodwood and Brands Hatch) on my previous bikes it would have been a ATGATT compromise or made the events uncomfortable and much less enjoyable.

GS = The 2 wheeled Car.

Me and Missus just back from Loire. Temps in mid 30`s and there were bikers walking round wearing the full kit, carrying jackets, tank bags and helmets. Made us sweat just seeing them. All our gear locked away on bike, so we could stroll round in shorts and flipflops. Agree with you, Original Concept. In my view, boxes look crap but they sure are handy. Also agree Vario top box is too small.

As you say OC - old news to a lot of us - but great to hear someone else seeing the light :thumb2

Carrying capacity

Once you realise that the panniers are not the widest part of the bike - the mirrors will be what stops you going through a gap - you will stop worrying about them. I rodefor years with a big Givi topbox - but after I had had trouble with the brackets I was reluctant to put any weighty items in them. When I changed my bike I went for the standard BMW top box + a Bagster tank bag.( It is smaller than the Givi but it matches the panniers.)

I do something similar but at these events I never manage to find somewhere suitable to get chnaged. Being a bit old fashioned I won't drop my leathers in front of an audience.

Nick, you don't want to be worried about a little thing like that .. :augie

OC, you remind me just how versatile the GS is in standard trim against all the 'regular' bikes I've owned over the years. Nice to hear you got to Goodwood using the bike - I may do just that next year to avoid all the queues.

Looks like you se the luggage exactly like I do as a locker for when you get somewhere and need to dump the gear safely.

I have even been mountain hiking by carrying the walking boots etc in the luggage and then swapping bike gear for walking gear at my destination :) If you wear the shorts part of hiking trousers under the bike gortex, no need to worry about changing in public either.

Have I lost the thread?

I can easily carry 20 litres of wine ( in plastic 'bidons') in the panniers - that conforms to the recommended maximum weight.
