Been a long while since I had to adjust valve clearances on a motorbike, my Buell was Hydraulic tappets and the Ducatis were desmo shims so no tappets for twenty odd years :rob I done mine about 1200 miles ago, quietened it down a bit but still a bit noisy for my tastes  done some more investigating and found some 1200's (mines an 04) had the spring type cam chain adjusters like the 1150, so I ordered the updated version from Motorworks :thumb2 great service by the way. Fitted them last week (ordered both sides but only the nearside is an updated version) and the engine changed it's tone completely, rattle gone but it seemed to develop a lumpy, knocking bottom end :nenau So I decided to check the valves again this morning and found I had adjusted them on the tight side:blast not all, but some and some were 20tho instead of 30tho :augie I spent a bit more time this time and got them spot on and the difference is incredible, balanced the throttle bodies as well after that and the bike sounds and goes better than ever :D lesson learned "don't over tighten valves to make your :GS quieter" ;)

If you have set the tappets to 20 and 30 tho i suggest you do them again !
Correct clearance is .006 inlet .012 ex or .15mm inlet .30mm ex

Read carefully, some that should have been 30 were 20 and are now 30 and what should be 15 are now 15 ;)

Can you rephrase this? Its incomprehensible to me.

What Surmanator is saying is that your reference to 20 and 30 thou is incorrect irrespective of which way they're moved. The correct clearance is 6 thou inlet and 12 thou exhaust

I think you may have taken the mm value (in hundredths of a mm) and set them to that number of thou.

30 thou is 0.75mm and 20 thou is 0.5mm that sound very very large even for tractor like BMW twins...suggest you read carefully again.

Apologies, .30mm and .15mm is what I meant, but you knew that anyway ;)
