My bike two years old come March 1st.

BMW require £386.75 + £100 excess per claim, whereas Warranty Direct are quoting £227.21 for what appears to be the same cover (ish)
Both include breakdown and onward travel cover.

Thing is, are W/Direct any good ?. Has anyone tested them ?

The products that warranty direct supply to the 2hand car trade are Mechanical breakdown policies, and therefore something needs to have failed, ie broke not just seized/not working

I have only ever had dealings with Warranty Direct over cars when I was on the dealer side of the Service Desk and to say they were difficult to deal with would be an understatement

I reaseaeched this last year , when mine was up. I just felt should I ever get a problem , I would like to think BMW would deal with it easier and directly , so thought for the sake of saving £160., I went with BMW.

WD had changed ownership some years ago and is not what is used to be. The person who used to run WD launched https://www.motoreasy.com, I can't see on his website a bike warranty plan , but I shall ask him if there a option in the future

Just tried these.... The buggers let you fill in all the forms, which brings up all the relevant vehicle info............. Then they tell you they do not cover motorcycles.

I would rather save the hefty yearly premium and spend the money if and when needed. After all, modern vehicles are mostly reliable. Preventative self maintenance should help keep most problems at bay....

That's the way for me. With YouTube/forums/eBay it's a lot easier to DIY and fix things cheaper these days.

My RT had ESA, when it went wrong BMW warranty picked up the tab...£1800 ESA,handle bar control and labour You do get recovery ass well in U.K. and Europe.

When I read this sort of post I'm ready to give them the money immediately.......... I suppose it's all about peace of mind, and having the BMW backup does that.

My view is that most people who actually own their bikes , have paid their hard earned out and it would be a fairly severe financial impingement to end up with a bill for say £2000 or so for ESA replacement or similar or worse an intermittent CANBUS fault requiring extensive workshop diagnostic time when the bike is out of warranty.

Whilst a bike is up to 5 or 6 years old it is still worth a fair bit of cash ,that is unless it has faults which you cannot afford to fix at which stage it becomes a expensive garage ornament , a cheap E Bay sale or part exchange and you are well out of pocket.

Okay £350 a year is a fair bit to pay out but it is affordable spread over the year , no warranty and a large bill for repair would mean in my case no European motorcycle holiday for that year .

Through my mates garage I see far too many recent cars ie 5 or 6 years old requiring not only mechanical but also electronic /electrical/diagnostic work which can run into the £1000's to sort and owners just cannot afford to have them fixed.

The top of the range LC models will probably NOT have major mechanical failures but as for the electronics ????????

I agree with an earlier post, a mechanical breakdown insurance is often a total waste of money. I dealt with loads of them during my years in the motor trade. They tend to stick to the line that something has to be broken, Usually the customer has to authorise stripping down at their risk. Unless you can show them a broken part they then refuse to pay up leaving the customer to foot the bill.

What you need is something that extends the warranty given by the manufacturer, hopefully on the same terms but you can expect a few conditions due to age and mileage.

I have now parted with the cash, and have total peace of mind for the next 12 months............... £412.00 with a £50 excess.

It's a little over a £1 a day for peace of mind I suppose. I once bought a Mercedes van for £3000 because the owner had seized the engine up, because he never bothered checking the oil. He had to have a new engine fitted, which cost him £3000 ,and he could not afford to pay, so I payed him the £3000 for the van. So just be sensible, then it's a 50 50 call I think.

A friend of mine used to swear by Warranty Direct for his cars but that was at least 15 years ago.
New ownership etc is a whole new ball game.
TBH with a bike costing new at £15K to £20K it seems daft to not use the BMW warranty when the new bike warranty runs out.
In my case I bought an older hexhead and took the risk that stuff would break or wear out.
But I "only" paid £7000 and it's now worth more like £4000.

It is worth pointing out that the BMW warranty is not with BMW but an insurance company, cannot remember which one but Mondial comes to mind. Some items are not covered - I seem to remember some discussion about switchgear not covered.
I would still take it out though - peace of mind and breakdown cover. Or you get get a new bike....

It's a BMW branded warranty

I had gearbox potentiometer switch fail on my old 06 GSA which wasn't covered under the warranty but between BMW, Mondial & NOG they equally stepped up to the plate and contributed towards the repair

Like most things in life ....... you get what you pay for but if you ask nicely the rules can and sometimes are, bent to assist
