Just had my 12000 miles service and my 2 year warranty is up. The bike has had a faulty ring antenna, tyre pressure gauge in the wheels, and rear disc but thats it. Bike rides well and looks new. The extended warranty for one more year is £310 or £29 month.

Just would like to know the general consensus about this please?

Pay the money and forget about it.. You probably won't need it.....

If you don't pay it the evil BMW pixies will make your bike fall apart...

Renewed mine, four days later final drive went, which according to dealer was about a £1200 job !

You pay your money etc etc !

Stand by for a steady stream of differing opinions. Its like any other insurance, saves you loads if you make a claim, waste of money if you don't. Its a personal decision and based on how risk averse you are. I decided not to take out the warranty, do my own servicing and stump up for a new part if one breaks. So far, I'm £250 up on the deal after 6 months and 6K miles. I have had the FD repaired recently which BMW paid for even though the bike was out of warranty by 6 months and only cost £260 all in anyway.

Reminds me of that VW ad years ago with the bloke that put all his cash on Red and it came up black but then he owned a Golf as "everyone has to have something in life they can rely on"

Is buying a GS the equivalent of walking into a casino and the extended warranty buying a Golf:augie:augie

Personally I like living dangerously which means my final drive will go next week:blast

What do you mean next week? Havn't you seen the puddle of oil under your bike already :D

If money was no object hey! thing is it's another £300 ish for something I may never use! But there again if I do need it....... I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure?

Just got mine back new final drive a work to g/box. feck knows how much that lot came to.i paid £50 excess.

I use Warrenty Direct, £220 a year and no excess, they just paid out £667 for a new drive shaft, AND £120 for recovery, no excess, no mileage deductions, I've done 29k in 14 months, with a total of 43k on the clock now.

You do not have to pay it all up front it can be done monthly. It also includes breakdown recovery UK/Europe.

So would they cover a bike 3 years out of warranty that hasn't been dealer serviced?

Mines covered, not been dealer serviced since 12k,(now 43k). Warrenty direct only stipulate you stick to the service schedule with a Vat registered dealer.
Gary £220 a year paid monthlyI'm £560 up so far this year.

I never have extended warranty on smal stuff (under £1000) such as TV's, I put £100 a month into a savings account and recently robbed it to help buy GS as it was buuilding up.

A £500 tv is one thing, I can afford to replace it, over the years this has served me well, these things normally last 4-5 years so extended warranties normally run out just before the blow up, and of course this years £500 TV is next years £300 TV.

I cannot afford £1200+ for an FD, or for a new engine if it blew, in the past I have taken the risk on other bikes, with all the doom and gloom regarding FD / EWS / FPC / ABS Controllers on the GS I will pay my £300, there are just too many doubts for me personally.

As stated if nothing goes wrong I have wasted my money, but if I spend £300 and never have a problem for the year I will be happy enough, I consider it part of the cost of GS ownership, just like insurance, tax and servicing and adding it all up at the moment it seems worth it.

Oh how I wish I had taken out a warranty..... £2000 buys a lot of xmas presents. A new ABS unit and final drive was not on my xmas list.

Warranty Direct quoted me £248 year which includes 25% discount off the usual price of £330. Does not include breakdown cover, but I am with the RAC.

BMW cover £283 + £100 excess, no breakdown in that price.

WD are cheaper but which is best for overall service, are they about the same?

Arnt we all missing the point here,by coming to except that the build quality is shite.
Shouldnt we get more than a few thousand miles before major parts fail?
I know BMW,s seem to be built by accountants not engineers these days but i think we should demand a bit more quality for our money.
Could the lack of quality be a plan by BMW just to keep thier parts and warranty division in profit?

Exactly wreck diver, If the BM cars were not doing 200k on a final drive they'd soon do something about it.
in the 60's you'd expect to do an engine rebuild every 50k on a Cortina, if that happened now they'd be out of business. Cars are getting more and more 7 year warrenty's (Kia or some thing like),3 year unlimited mileage warrenty's, that would equate to 100,k on my bike alone.

It's down to the small voice again, 5 thousand BMW owners or 5 million BMW car owners.
Ride safe
